I think we got pinged. Wouldn't be surprised.

Either there is a mistake, something about nature not understood, or we got pinged. I'm hoping we got pinged. 187.5? Why that number?

A device a couple hundred kilometers in diameter with the ability to send an information signal for a millisecond, with as much energy as the sun produces in a month. Think that might have some decent range? Perhaps just a very simple signal, maybe containing no information other than a simple pattern. Just enough to let us, and many others know, that we aren't alone.

How many light years ago was this? maybe they are all dead by now.

Put the copied text in quotes

When did you return from vacation?

There is no copied text. I read its either 22 light years away, or billions. So the news sources are a little jumbled. Google it.

Also, what vacation? I've been busy. Did you miss me or something? Of course you did.

The article says billions of light years away...or maybe not. Maybe they've been pinging us for billions of years though and we've only just noticed it. The mothership could be coming tomorrow for all we know.

The Zardayan military has been mustered and no less than 60 mother ships are currently in hyperspace. They will arrive half a light year from earth in August, 2019. Advanced EMP will wipe out modern civilization without a shot fired, and their robotic emissaries will then indicate terms of our enslavement.

Zardaya has suffered infertility and human men and women both will be used as hosts for their offspring.

They claim there is a 5 in 10,000 probability that the line-up is coincidence. "If the pattern is real," says Learned, "it is very, very hard to explain."
Sooo, 1 in 2000?
Seems like pretty good odds to me when you have the ENTIRE UNIVERSE creating noise.

So I know nothing of astronomy/astrophysics and even my gen physics abilities are poor, but how can they make an estimation of the energy associated with the burst when they apparently have no idea how far the signal is from us? I mean, the article seems to acknowledge this...

If the bursts actually come from inside the Milky Way, they need not be so energetic (just like a nearby flashlight can light up the ground but a distant light does not).

...but if it's so powerful, how could it be a human satellite? Following their link to the first discovery there's explanation in how they estimate distance, but they don't seem to explain why that wouldn't hold up for these newer signals.

I welcome our Zardayan overlords.

And they've only had 14 years to identify this satellite... it didn't take that long to find Bin Laden.

The article also says it gave off more energy than the sun does in a month, but the article inside the article says its as much as 1 day. Then the first article the waves have been appearing since 2001, but the second one says 2007.....

Lots of misinformation apparently, but a very cool topic regardless.

Yeah, its jumbled. Maybe refer to NASA or something.

Who is Zardaya? never heard of it Google vaguely referred to wow...

Or maybe two galaxies were communicating with each other that way, by blowing up suns, like our ancestors did by smoke signals and stuff... We might just be evesdropping

Maybe it was the aliens' most powerful weapon, and it was supposed to wipe us all out. They just misjudged the distance.

And the first time a pulsar was detected, it got everyone in a tizzy. A source of radio pulses with an extremely stable frequency? Well that seems a bit unnatural....

...oh wait, it looks like some stars can spin incredibly fast, and they blast out beams of radio waves as they spin and wobble. But either it's still not aliens, or else it's aliens that are 500 million years ahead of us technologically, and pulsars are actually their version of a Galactic Positioning System.

diabolical!

they are gonna throw old quasar televisions and microwaves at us!
I do love the choice of "Quasar" as a brand name for consumer appliances.

"Let's name our company after the most powerful radiation emitters in the known universe. That should quell any suspicions that our TVs and microwaves might generate dangerous radiation."
:hmm:

It really does make you wonder what might be going on out there in the universe, while we sit on our little speck of dirt on the internet and warring over most of the planet daily.

I had read that it was the same way with pulsars when they were first 'heard', and same for quasars when they were first 'heard'.

They think it is just some celestial process they haven't seen before...or....

They also are not ruling out that it could be something terrestrial that is sending it.

That's a pretty wide gap of possibilities that probably aren't alien transmissions.
