I think this would be a cool idea...

I had an idea that would bring the government closer to the people and make us a little bit less hostile to each other. Instead of interviewing/asking random people on the street who don't really care about politics but would like to get on tv anyways, they could setup a forum/chat room(forum sounds albiet better) where they could voice their opinions and the govt. would read them either getting ideas from the people or see people voicing their concerns. And possibly every month or so there could be a chat room setup with the president and anyone could come in and talk to him, it may not be 1 on 1 but it'd be pretty close.

The politicians/bureaucrats wouldn't be able to control the message and therefore wouldn't go for it.

I don't see the politcians controlling the KKK, PETA and other stupid organizations, it's called "freedom of speech" and they could hire the best of the best moderators....the ATOT moderators! :p

Let me clarify my point. If the politicians/bureaucrats can't control the message they won't participate. There is a reason Bush does so few press conferences. He can't control the issues raised (except when the reporters are hired hacks of course). Presidents prefer staged, scripted appearances.

i do think this is a good idea though, that way people can voice their opinions directly rather than relying on their congressmen and senators (if you want something done right, do it yourself)

although it should be kept at constructive criticism, i don't think that a thread should be allowed to stay just to bash bush, if they are going to create a thread or something it should be on what they think he has been done wrong and suggestions on how to correct it in a calm rational and mature manner

there are millions of blogs and website forums (MoveOn.Org and Freepers for example) where the politicians can go for extreme viewpoints and they can just surf the internet or google a specific topic to read the blogs/forums for normal Americans to get their viewpoint.

The President and other politicians would never put themselves in a situation where they would answer questions from the 'ordinary Joe'. They will continue to hold up their index fingers to see which way the wind is blowing and base policy on that... Constitution be dammed.

Instead of interviewing/asking random people on the street who don't really care about politics...

That's somewhat the point, isn't it? When you set up a forum/chatroom, the majority of folks won't bother. Meanwhile, the minority that stands the most to lose/gain will be the most vocal. It'll become a front for industry lobbyist.

For example, the issue of steel imports. The US steel industry has trouble competing in the global steel market. Most Americans won't care where they get their steel, even though as a whole, they may be benefit from imported steel more than domestic steel. But the benefits are spread so thin over the public, no one bothers advocating for it. Meanwhile, a small group of steel industry workers will be losing their jobs, so they become very vocal. Given an open forum, only the steel workers will bother to raise the issue, making it appear the American public really cares about producing steel domestically.

So millions of people could be posting or chatting at the same time? It'd also attract a lot of extremists and spammers. You can already write letters to your congressperson so why not just do that?

well im sure if you were a politician you would be able to read between the lines and see just exactly whay you have stated here, but then again you could probably be like me and really have no faith or trust in politicians (i.e. they wont see problems like what you just described) :)

Your right, it would but so does this site and then they simply go away (with proper filtering) I'd assume. I doubt that millions would post because not THAT many people would be interested. And each issue would be confined to one thread and they could have multiple forums like, you guessed it, P&N where you b1tch and moan incoherently about how much you hate bush/other politicians. And they'd have other forums pertaining to other issues like the copyright act (which would fall into the vague category "Technology" and probably a more specified forum.

I don't think Anand's servers have a million visitors at the same time. This forum only has 532 users logged in along with all the people lurking. There are only 132,505 registered users.

A giant, free-for-all political forum or chatroom that gives someone the opportunity to directly contact the American president will definitely attract millions of visitors. According to this page, the U.S. had 159 million internet users in 2002. I'm sure the number is higher now in 2006. Let's say 1 out of 50 internet users visits this website to talk to the president. That's already 3 million people.
