Just received my order from mwave of an Athlon XP 2200+, Abit NF7, and 512MB Kingston memory. I was looking it all over when I noticed this chip on the core of the Athlon. Is this going to be a problem? This stuff is for my younger brother and I don't want to pull his machine apart and then find out that the CPU is dead.

BTW this is my first Athlon system. Do OEM CPUs normally come in just a piece of foam like that? I don't seem to remember an Intel CPU coming like that.

Took a much better pic with my Olympus C-740. :D High Res Pic

Was it wrapped like that with the rubber band?!

Newegg sends them in a plastic case with styrophome similar to that.

Yep and it was placed inside a bag with the memory and stapled to the invoice. The memory came in a hard plastic container so that may have chipped it in shipping.

Did you buy that from Mwave? They package there processors like that. If you did Mwave is easy to RMA with.

processor boxes cost like half a penny, can't believe they're so cheap

it's not like the processor cost a few bucks either

Yes from Mwave. I have been ordering from them since 99 with zero problems. It really surprised me the CPU was shipped like that.

both the OEM AMD CPU's I have bought via web have come in a sturdy, apparently designed for the purpose box. First one was thick cardboard, lined with thick foam on the top and bottom inside, and the second was a hard plastic case with foam in it. Both times these were then in another protective box (probably if I hadnt ordered other stuff they'd be in a jiffy/protective bag.

Just look at it. It's pretty obvious that yours has come in a way that is NOT how processors should be shipped. :Q :disgust:

holy crap that is CHEAP!!! The CPU will probably still work I have a way bigger chip out of an old 1.4 T-Bird but if I had just bought a brand new CPU I would NOT accept that. RMA that thing back.

I got a refurb OEM from Newegg and it came inside of a plastic AMD shell inside of another box with bubble wrap filling the box up. That's really shoddy "packaging." They may have tossed an RMA chip into your order accidentally.

It looks fine to me. I see chipped processors all the time and they work without any problems. A tiny chip like that isnt going to hurt it at all and in the process of installing it with HS/F repeatedly it will chip more and more. Dont worry about it unless you installed it and it doesnt work. RMA for that alone is just a waste of time.
