My friend ordered a combo processor/mobo. The mobo is the 133a so the jumper was default set to 100mhz fsb. Well we had to leave at it that until he got some pc133 ram. So we installed win98 & win2k on it. Win98 worked fine but win2k took like 4 tries to install and half the time it wouldn't boot. So we wiped it out at just put 98 on it. About this time he got his pc133 in. We put that in there and set the jumper to 133. Now the processor was at 1.2ghz. Win98 would load and then lock up. However, it would load up and was useable in safe mode. Win2k wouldn't even install, it would just freeze up during the installation process. We thought it was heat so we took his hsf off (which was using thermal tape). The tape had melted onto the core and the core had a red tint to it. So I cleaned it off good and put some Arctic Silver on it and put it back on. It was actually kind of hotter. So I took my dual fan/heatsink and put it on and it was still kinda hot. So we added a little more Arctic silver with my hsf and it was running real cool (idle 35 celsius). Then we put his hsf back on and it started running hot again. So I checked to make sure there wasn't too much arctic silver on it or too little, it looked fine. We put my hsf on it because it had just been running cool with mine earlier. We booted it up and all the sudden it spun the hell out of my fans and shutoff. It smelled like something had kinda burned. Now the processor wont work on mine or his motherboards. Do yall think the processor was bad? At some points it would run nice and cool (idling at 35 celsius) and just randomly it would get real hot (idling 60 celsius). Does it sound like its fried?
