I think nerds and geeks deserve the stereotype they get...

I don't like to generalize, especially because I'm part of the group, but we seriously deserve the negative stereotype of the nerd and geek.

I work in the IT department in my university, so not only do I work with a bunch of geeks, I meet all the students in the faculty as well.

It is so depressing to see how many fat (or stick thin), greasy, and generally anti-social people there are.

You guys should step outside and get a little sun every so often...

hahaha nice... there was a thing i was reading about skin cancer in the aussieland. Apparently there's significantly more people with cancert on the right arm and right side of face and they couldn't figure out for the longest time. Eventually they realized that people drive with their windows down all the time...

Um k.. guess you also think certain races are more well endowed than others as well..

just becasue in your tiny little world thats how things are doesnt mean thats how it is in the bigger picture...

my IT dept here at a fortune 500 oil company none of the IT people fit that description..

most are very active.. none out of shape at all.. all of us are over 30 years old
4 of us ride motorcycles.. 2 of which are 40+ grand Iron Horse choppers.
others have sports cars and hummers..
most of us are married or are in long term relationships..

all are well groomed and in style.. if they were not well groomed company would ask them to go home and fix it.. my company does not look on bad hygiene/apperance well at all..

most of us do play some 360 games and PC games here and there but nothing over the top..
All of us have what most would prolly deem as excessive amounts of electronic toys though.. thats 1 part that does fit the geek status..

Your problem is you are still around kids... and not really in the REAL world of IT yet..

maybe its time to get out and really see what IT and fortune 500 is like..

I was the same way with my old car (except on the left arm). Looks really funny if one arm is burned and the other isn't ... trust me 😉

QFT. Same here. Most IT guys and gals here are young, successful individuals who spend their free time working out, rock climbing, dating, and doing other hobbies that young professionals can do with their lifestyles.

The OP isn't describing the real world - he's working at a university, FFS. Might as well descibe all males as drunken slobs and girls as whores.

Myopic world views, FTL!

I see a lot of messed up students, but I'm not really taking them into my overall assessment. In my department, I'm the youngest person at 23. The average age is >35.

I definitely think you guys are in the minority with your IT staff if they are as well-rounded and well-groomed as you make them out to be.

Well being as competitive as IT is here in Houston you better present a very good image of yourself..
I deal with Continental Airlines across the street and ExxonMobile down the street as well as Oxy on the other side of town.. and all these companies IT departments dont have the types of people you are calling out..

todays IT business means in your face customer service.. you think for 1 second if I was a greasy haired non showered fatty that the second I went to a VPs office he would not be calling my manager to complain? regardless of how good a job I did?

even our LINUX and System Admins that never leave server rooms are not the people you compare them to.

Good luck getting a job if you are one of those types of people..
by the way.. not a dig here but working for a College really isnt high level IT these days..

the real money in IT is in private business.. this is where it gets very competitive..

just an FYI here at my company most IT/Desktop/LINUX/Admin dept. are ex Navy and Air Force techs.. with a few Army guys around here and there..
This company tends to like the cleancut immaculate image that ex military usually provide.

It sucks that some people are like that, yes.

I don't think that stereotype really fits for the vast majority though. I know a lot of nerds and geeks, but only two guys really come close to fitting your description and one of them has a decent dating life and the other has had an attractive girlfriend for quite some time.

I've worked IT and I'm a Physics major with a lot of Engineering, Physics and Comp Sci friends.

i would say the general assumption is true to some extend but as with EVERYTHING else there are always exceptions (people need to always keep that in mind)

but i think it is changing for the better (there are less social outcasts going into the computer feild)

i think college also plays a part in weeding out the kids that know a little and just want to play video games all the time

i consider myself well groomed and i have no problem dealing with people i don't know and/or customers
