I just got done formatting my HD on my gaming computer, so I reach over and push the reset button to start the reload the computer fans startup then one long beep, then the computer shuts down. I've removed every card/component and memory stick one at a time and swapped the the vid card and power supply with no change(start, long beep, shut down).

Is it worth my effort swapping out the processor or is my mobo toast for sure?

System:
Soltek 75DRV4
XP2000 that I was running at a mild OC, but I returned it 133 bus speed
Adaptec 39160
Seagate Cheetah 18.0 GB @ 15000 RPMS
512MB Crucial 2100DDR
Toshiba DVD
Intel NIC
SB Live
Leadtek Geforce4 4200

Win98se

Well, it looks like I fried my processor. I swapped the a 850 Duron I had laying around and the damn thing booted up to a floppy. I thought the CPU wasn't under warranty, but it was a retail cpu not oem. :)

Looks like I'll be doing a forced upgrade. I could always do a mobo too(nvidia2). :D

Hiya

Just check your cpu fan? If it's dead, it could be the safety precaution of the mobo to shutdown the PC to prevent a fried cpu.. Happened to me once ;)

check that the heatsink is on properly, and also remove the motherboard, rest it on a piece of cardboard and connect the power supply and try it. Try it without the cdroms, floppy, hard drive, etc connected...

I just fixed a system that had a misplaced brass standoff that was causing that problem
