I think my roomate is crazy, or am I?

Ok, so somehow my romate and I got into a discussion about credit cards. He refuses to get a card fom some bank, something like bank of america or whatnot, thats not important.

He refuses to use them becasue they only use 4 digits, all numbers, for their online system. Now, thats a crapy way to have passwords online, I understand this of course, but its not like they wouldent lock your account if you just started guessing every combo.

The reason he wont use it is becasue he is afraid that the bank will get hacked and get the hashes of some of the passwords, and then since the password is so simple it'll take no time to get the password.

I know what your thinking, no big deal? what can they do with your online password for your credit card? And even if they do your not responsible for charges you dont make!

Here is his theory, the bank gets hacked and they dont know about it. He dosent notice that small little "charges" (not sure how they do that online) are appearing on his account and he never notices.

Eventually its discovered, but somehow the back has no idea when it happened so hes afarid he'll have to pay for the charges! Crazy Right?

I know what your thinking! whats the difference between a good pw and a bad one, your not responsible and if they have it more than a week before being discovered then they could have craked your PW already!

I have no idea what hes thinking, but he thinks that if they dont discover they have been hacked for 2 weeks, that somehow its better that it took a week for them to figure out the password other than right away. Either way they can make the charges! But of course he thinks the bank will never know when they where hacked! so they wont know which charges are his and which are fraud!

Now the thing that really gets me is that he thinks he'll never notice the charges, that can only be made ONLINE mind you, because they will make them apear the same (or at least close) to stuff he already charges. ($5 to BK here, $7 at a gas station here, you get the idea)

OK, I'm done.

your roomate is an idiot.

Exactly what I was saying. I mean seriously the bank has no idea they have been hacked for a long period of time?!? And since they never discover the time they are hacked they wont refund people becasue it simply could have been them! NO WAY.

I've had my dad get stuff refunded by mistake becasue hey couldent figure the charges out!

Havent both Citybank and BOA lost sensitive customer information in the past? Im not 100% sure it was BOA but personally I use only CC from my credit union.. the reason is because there is no default rate either theyll give you a credit line or not.

He's afraid that you'll steal his credit card and sign up for a bunch of online pr0n!

It's a legitimate concern, he wouldn't notice those extra pr0n charges cause he makes so many of them anyway

lol. WTF!

I wouldn't use a system like that either. That is kind of messed up to have everyone's password just 4 digits. Their banking system can't be that good with such a messed password policy.

Really, what's the big deal? On a daily basis we unthinkingly avoid things which it's more socially acceptable to avoid based on far less evidence and reasoning. It's not like he'll die without a credit card. I say  to him for thinking for himself and :frown: to you for getting on his ass for not conforming.

I can see the argument for not using the system because the password is only 4 digits. That's WAY too lax in this day and age.

His other reasons are cracked out though.

meh. even with only 4 characters, that password is probably more secure than the server retaining your CC# at your favorite e-commerce site.

That is Bank of America, and they just changed their password system a month ago. I remember logging on and being forced to pick a new alphanumeric ID/password combo.

Funny thing is...I have no idea what I picked and haven't checked my account since! How's THAT for secure??!? 😀

you know what I think? mind your own business.

I saw my boss paying his bills with usps money order and I asked him why. he told me he didn't have a checking account.

uhh.. my BoA password is 13 digits long. they allowed you to changed it a while back. and they have their new thing I haven't tried yet.

regardless, your roommate is an idiot. just keep tabs on your statement and you'll be fine. I always find something that doesn't look familiar at first.. but i back track and realize I jumped the gun a little too early. Only once have I had a fraudulent charge.. and well, it's hard to miss $7k being charged to your account.

Really? Must depend on the area or something, Ive had BoA for 3+ years and my password has always been 8+ alphanumeric.
