I think my iMac G5 is dead.

First gen iMac 17" with 1.8 I think.

Won't get past the boot screen.
Tried the hardware and software disk repair CD but it didn't work, now I'll try to boot on my install disk instead.

Anyone have any ideas as to what might be wrong?

How long have you had it?

Haven't had any newer than a g3 desktop but they used to do things like that when the internal battery died

The most likely culprit is the hard drive if it posts and won't go any further and disk repair won't work. If you can boot from the optical drive, then you should be able to take a look at the hard disk and see if it is working properly. If it is, you cann just refortmat and reinstall. If the HDD is not working, all is not lost since the first gen G5 is pretty easy to get into and swap out the hard drive (unlike the Frontrow-enabled G5 and Intel iMacs). If you don't have Applecare, a hard drive swap might be worth trying.

Probably, though there's always the chance that it's only system files that are corrupted and it's not the whole disk that's dead, in which case you still may be able to recover some stuff.
