Okay, I've got a Western Digital 20 GB hard drive that I bought in December of 2000. I wanted to be able to reinstall a fresh copy of Windows on it and now I'm getting a message from my BIOS saying that there's been a primary disk failure. Did I just lose my hard drive or what's going on here? When I tried using the auto detect in my BIOS for the hard drive, it listed it with 0 MB. WTF? I hope I still have the warranty on it.

Wd hd's come with a 3 year warranty so you should still be covered if the hd is bad.

Are you sure it's all Western Digitals? I just checked their website and it said mine expired December 21, 2001. This was a retail drive that I bought from Best Buy...

With regards to the hard drive: You might want to try setting it manually rather than automatically. Also, changing the OS should not affect whether the hard drive shows up in the bios.

With regards to warranty: I think Maxtor's warranty is typically 3yrs past the last year they make it, but I could be wrong. WD may or may not have the same standards.

I know changing the OS shouldn't be a problem because I've went from Windows 98 to Windows ME to Windows 2000 and Windows XP. I still haven't called WD because I'm waiting to hear from my insurance company due to what happened to my car last week. I'll throw the drive back in and see if I can configure it manually. I thought I remembered seeing the website say something to the effect of limited warranty expired... so what's the limited warranty supposed to mean?

As said above, try to detect it manually first. If the bios detects i´t properly, go to the WD website and download their disk check program in support as before any rma is issued, they'll rrequire you to run their test if the hd is detected during the boot up.

could be a mbr problem.
