I think my Hard Drive is ready to pass on.

I've got a quick question for you hard drive makers out there.

Why the fvck do you not make a hard drive that will last?

I'm no CAD user, Server User, or any person that rides their hard drives to hard. I'm a consumer, at worst, and a gamer at best.

I can't even use that as an excuse, as this is my family computer. My mom might use it for email, and my brother is the most hardcore user, who plays warcraft!!

I mean for fvcks sake people, I haven't had this hard drive for 9 months yet. I bought a maxtor over my 120gxp that died almost 5 times.

My plea to hard drive makers, make one that we can save our stuff on, without fear of losing it the next day.

I know lots of people who have had problems with Maxtors.

My 40 gigger is still running strong though after a couple of years.

Any heat build up? I've had 2 maxtors die in 3 months, it was a bit warm inside the machine. But they were 30 giggers.

40 gb Quantum Fireball......... works great for over 4 years ................but I think they where bought out by Matrox 😛

Cheers,

Be thankful you don't have my old computer. I RMA'd two hard drives back to Western Digital in the time I had it, not to mention the countless reinstallations of Windows, replacing the mobo, the fans, the video card, etc. before I finally got some cash together to build a new machine.

I can't say I blame Western Digital, as I've used their hard drives in many other machines with no problems, but that computer was fscked from the day it was built.

While it is certain that everything mechanical will eventually fail, there are only 3 ways that someone could have the hard drive failures you have had.
1. Crappy power supply
2. Poor case cooling
3. Bad luck

And I don't believe in luck. 😉

Maxtor makes excellent drives.

I've seen 3 Deathstars dead, RMA'ed all 3 and each was dead within 4 months. I have a 30 gig from 1999 for my main data/documents drive, an IBM something from 1998 for my boot drive... and my 80gig SATA. No problems recently. Knock on wood.

wd 80 gig died ater 3 months

no signs of death, just up and died while watching Mean Machine on my computer

My 30 gig Quantum Fireball AS choked on me a while back. I've had 3 maxtors die as well.

Still have an 8 year old seagate chugging away fine, and all of my WD drives are running great.

I had 2 deathstars 60GXPs running in a RAID 0 config in my Antec Case.
The Antec case had three 80mm fans and one of the 80mm fans was blowing directly over the deathstars 24/7, and yet they still died.
Deathstar survival is all about luck, karma, deeds in your past lives, etc.
The guy further up in the thread who doesnt believe in luck has probably never had bad things happen to him 🙂

My 32 GB 5400 RPM IBM TravelStar Laptop drive is dying on me after 4 years, but I figure that's not too bad since laptop drives weren't expected to be in constant use. 😉 Plus, I also blame it on the drive being a first generation 5400 RPM laptop drive. I'm hoping the new Hitachi will last a bit longer than 4 years.

The real PITA though, was finding another 5400 RPM laptop drive. Most places only carry the 4200 RPM laptop drives. Blech.

Yeah it's warm naturally since it's an AMD rig.

I've had this happen too. Seems like in the past two years more HD's have died for me than all the years before combined. All cases are configured so that there is a fan blowing on the HD directly. I am pretty sure that its not a Power issue. And I dont believe in luck either.

Is it possible that the HD quality has really gone down over the past 2-3 yeras? Maybe somebody should create a poll for this and see what peoples opinions are about this.
