I think my hard drive is dead...Help Please

I have a IBM Deskstar GXP 40.0 GB @ 7500 RPMS and when I try to boot up it just stays on the windows xp loading screen forever and the hard drive makes a ticking noise over and over.
Luckily I have Linux installed on a second hard drive which is how I am typing this right now. Every thing works fine with linux, but windows won't even load on the other drive. I've had the other drive for about
nine months with no problems and it even worked fine last night. Any suggestions or do I have to get a new hard drive? Thanks
 
From the sounds of it, it might be bad(clicking is not a good sound). Can you access it from a different drive? ie. hard drive, or boot disk? If so, get your info off of it and RMA that sucker.. fast!
 
ya, loud noises usually mean something is physically damaged

i agree, try reading it from another boot drive, it could be just some windows files are the only ones really messed up, other than that, time to RMA
 
Sure sounds like a bad drive... looks like you got one of these bad IBM drives (75 and 60 GXPs) ... actually there is quite a lot of em out there.... myself I lost count after the 20th or so... we ordered more than 150 computers with the IBM drives in em..

Ive sent back 4 ibm 75gxp's so far, and will probably send another 2 back next week.

first run the drive fitness test utility from IBM. get it here

if it's bad contact them to RMA it (rma = return) here
 
If it is clicking, ticking, or making any other noises, get a replacement quickly and back up the files you need ASAP because it is starting to go bad.
 
Anyone know what actually causes the clicking sound? I figure it must be the actuator arm hitting against something inside the HD but what's causing it to do this instead of acting normally?
 
Yet again just like I predicted and told john that more IBM 60 and 75 series HD threads about them dieing would happen soon again. And here we go it happen again just like i said. BTW i do know it was not a hard thing to predict and was a given because just about anyone could of predicted this. I just wanted to say that i was the one who said more would happen and i was correct. Hehe.
