Anyhow, I've never had it happen to me personally, but it does happen from time to time. For Ground they're basically following computer algorithms, so crazy things can happen. If the computer says they can save $0.05 by shipping it to Timbuktu because the truck heading from Timbuktu to your city has some free space, then that's exactly what they'll do.
 
In all fairness, your fedex driver only goes from the closest location to your house. USPS and UPS do the same crap lately. Makes we wonder if they are really doing this or something is up with the tracking software.

I've noticed that ups seems to be the worst at reporting the correct location of packages. Then again usps has been pretty bad lately as well and they had a package out for delivery in another city so go figure.
 
Meanwhile the USPS delivery guys are doing donuts in the parking lot all week...
