I think my DVD drive may be burnt out (error message question)

I've been using my NEC 3520-A for a while now with no problems, but all of the sudden it won't copy or write DVDs. When I try to copy a DVD-R, it gives me this error message: (Illegal mode for this track - Illegal Request." before it even starts writing the table of contents. And when I try to just send a file to the drive to copy it, it says "Windows encountered a problem copying blah blah blah" or something like that. Does this mean that my drive is burnt out? Do I need to return it to Newegg ALREADY? Or is there some way to fix this?

*and the problem is NOT the media, because the same discs worked fine with the drive before*
