It's the only explanation for their behavior. They operate as a perfectly choreographed team without any verbal cues. They'll be sound asleep and suddenly stand as one and demand a carrot. This will often happen when they don't have visual contact with each other, and since there is no vocalization, it has to be smell. I suppose some form of ESP is possible, but they aren't all that bright.
I may have discovered a whole new field of study.

My sister's lab will eat carrots and celery. It's funny to watch him crunch on that.

My black cat sometimes farts, it's silent but deadly. If you can somehow imagine what poop mixed with rotten fish would smell like, that's basically a cat fart.

One of my dogs produces gas that a rhinoceros would be proud of.

I have no idea if it's legal or not. Regardless, I was never much into it.
If we're looking for simple answers, early onset senility would be more likely.
