My husband and I are house sitting for my folks this week, taking care of my dog and horse, while they're in California. The dog, Athens has had some trouble with her back legs lately on top of some other older dog health issues, but she's seemed happy still.

We worked from home yesterday because Athens isn't very happy staying by herself when we're at work. (Usually my mom and little sisters are home with her all the time.) On Friday we took her with us to my in-laws house, so she wouldn't be alone. Unfortunately, today we had to leave her during work and during an after work appointment. Afterwards, when we got home, she was missing from the completely locked yard. We looked for her everywhere we could but it was already dark and we weren't able to find her.

About five minutes after we gave up looking for the night, I heard her collar jingle and she came running (not walking) up to the house. She came in, drank some water, and lay down. Since then, she hasn't been able to stand up. We're not sure what adventure she had, but she's apparently been shot once with a pellet gun or something similar, leaving a small flesh wound in her side, lost a few nails and got a few cuts from somewhere. She's been panting like she ran a marathon for the last two hours, and is almost completely unresponsive. We managed to move her out to the garage onto her dog bed, and she was very good while we moved her, but if she's not any better by tomorrow we'll have to call a vet and have her put down.

Please pray that she'll recover at least long enough for my parents and the twins and my other sister (she's her especial dog) to come back and say goodbye to her. It's an answer to my prayer that she even came home, so we don't have to wonder what happened to her, and I'm grateful for that, but I know that losing her without a final goodbye will be very hard for the rest of my family.

Athens

Cliffs: My dog ran away, came back, and is doing very very poorly now. I may have to put her down in the morning. :(:(:(:(:(

Update: She passed away naturally a few minutes after I posed this.

How old is she?

She's 8, which may not seem very old but is a pretty usual lifespan for a Great Dane. We've known that she didn't have much longer to live, but having it happen while my family is away on vacation is hard.

I'm so very sad. We're in an apartment and can't have a pet right now, and she's the puppy I picked out of the litter 8 years ago. My mom and sister picked her littermate, Cairo, but Athens was always my favorite.

The quirkiest thing about her is that she's a good singer- she especially liked to sing to "House of the Rising Sun" on the piano. I always wanted to get a video of her doing it for you guys but never got a camera over here. I guess I won't have the chance now...

Dammit, I really hope she's better in the morning.

It's very hard on a family with an old dog who's nearing his or her time, I had to endure it not too long ago. Just think that if you have to go through with it, it'll be the best thing for her and she'll be in a better place.

I was just thinking the same thing rhino. Pellets can penetrate the skin fairly easy. Take her to the vet first thing in the morning. Tell him/her that she went missing for a while looks like she got shot here, her back legs have been acting funny lately. I hope for the best I know how it is to lose a pet (I lost one over the summer).

Whoever shot her with a pellet gun needs to be tied up and shot repeatedly with one until they realize that you just don't do that...

I hope your dog recovers, poor thing...

Hey guys,
Thanks for the good wishes. Athens passed away very shortly after I wrote this post. She was a really good dog - didn't cry or whimper once, never seemed to be in pain.

For those of you asking why I didn't take her to a vet, there wasn't anything wrong with her except old age, arthritis and her hip problem, all of which she'd had for a long time. The pellet gun (if it was that) only left a small flesh wound.

I am very sorry to hear about your loss. The death of a pet is always quite difficult.

We only think that. There's no real way to tell what happened. She could have gotten snagged on a fence or bitten by another dog, but I think the mark is too clean for either of those. In any case, it really didn't have a big effect on her. But yeah, if somebody shot her, they were a jerk.

My kitten passed away last night too, from panleukopenia. Even started injecting saline since he was throwing up but I guess he was just too little. Thought he would have made it since he was much stronger than the other one. The waiting and watching are the hard part.
