I think my doctor may be committing insurance fraud....

So i went to the doctor a few weeks back to get my foot checked out... He said i had a torn ligament and wanted me to wear a boot/walking cast... The conversation went like this...

Doc: I'm gonna have you wear a boot to keep it stable for 6-8 weeks.
Me: Ok, well i already have one from the last time i hurt my foot, i'll just use that one.
Doc: Oh, dont worry about it. We worked out a deal with the people who manuf. and sell these since we do so much business with them, so it won't cost you anything.

Today i got the notice from my insurance company. They billed my insurance $626 for the boot and an additional $250 for my two appointments to see him.

My insurance is covering $100 and saying the rest exceeds their allotted amount.

Last time i got the boot, i saw the bill, $175 for the boot and UF picked up the whole thing since it was at the schools infirmary.

Boot shows to be around $99 online...

Any idea what i can do from this point? I plan to call the insurance company tommorow to see what they say about it, but i didn't know if anyone else had experienced something like this before...

Standard operating procedure for doctors. They overbill insurance companies to pay for the uninsured. I went in for bronchaitis once and my insurance company got billed for bandaging.

So since my insurance company effectively paid for none of the boot, is the doctor going to bill me next for it? Were they just trying to see how much the insurance company would pay?

When I had my wisdom teeth pulled the dentist billed the insurance more then I would have had to pay since insurance pays a percentage. So the percentage of the billed cost was the same as the actual cost.

the difference between who physically pushes the buttons to bill the insurance company and the actual people that make the policy for the private office are two different things. the clerks dont say "hmm, I'm gonna charge $600+ for the boot" the docs. who own the business say "this is what you're to charge."
