it's a dell 600m which i've only had for a year and a half

the warranty is already gone

I'm starting to hear clicking sounds, probably from the harddrive.. sometimes when i type, sometimes when I'm not even typing

🙁

what can I do?

About the only thing you can do is not buy another Dell, that's going to be my policy.

I have a D505 and it already has multiple issues after only 5 months....battery died and is no longer recognized, clock has a different time every time it boots up, etc.

The Dells are pretty much junk.

The Newest dell laptop was recently (within the past 2 to 6 months) rate the best overall top of the line laptop money can buy. it out performed Alienware, HP, compaq and even self built systems. I say dont bash the name, bash the model. I've seen cases of certain models that would make someone boy cott the company and others would make the person advertise for free.

If your hardRive is going, backup your data now; if you dont have any means of backing up from your laptop, get a 2.5 to 3.5 conversion cable, plug the drive into your pc and copy away. THEN, hit ebay or shop around for a new or used, name brand laptop hardRive and slip it in!

hey if anyone out their doesnt want thier dell or any laptop = donations are accepted, i'll pay for shipping. give it give it! i'll make use of it!

There is a firmware update for some of the hard drives used in the Dells that gets rid of the clicking noise. Not sure which type you have in there...you need to double check before you download this update (it's for the Hitachi Travelstar drives):

http://support.dell.com/suppor...eid=4951&devlib=26

You should be able to tell what model hdd it is by looking in Device Manager or downloading something like belarc advisor, speedfan etc.

i just checked and I don't have a Hitachi
I have a Fujitsu

Consider upgrading to a 7200rpm HDD, if the rest of the laptop is fine it may just be the 1 component.

I have a 600m and haven't had any issues so far (Original HDD made clicking sounds from day 1, sounded a little like a camera shutter, but never had any issue with performance). They replaced just about everything on the system under warrenty (complete care) when I dropped the laptop when I fell down the stairs a few months ago.

I agree. If the hard drive dies, the rest of the laptop still works. Stick in a new hard drive and you should be fine. If not, then its time for a new laptop.

You can ask for harddrive whether it thinks it is healthy with S.M.A.R.T.

Under Linux you need 'smartutils' to get the status, under Windoze I don't know but there are free tools.

If the harddrive is clicking in the unhelthy clicking sense then it will also complain over SMART, it knows it's going to die.

If it is dying, do not change your usage pattern (e.g. if you had it on constantly, keep doing that, if you turned it on once a day keep doing that etc, you get the idea) and back it up now.

I find it hard 2 beleave that a *ell out performed a FRAGBOOK??? Amoung other massive lappys out there... That is just not a pill i can swallow.. Show me some PROOF and i will bow down.. But *ell aint anywhere near the Tech support of IBM or the power of PowerNotebooks or FragBook..

I'm not too impressed by my 9100. It's an okay computer, but the sound card sound-out board (WHICH IS MOUNTED ON A CASE FAN!) is already no longer working properly.
Of course, for 1200$, you can't expect too much.

My Dell Inspiron 8000 (PIII 700) is still going quite strong. Only problem I have is that the battery only lasts about 30-60 minutes. Had it almost exactly 4 years now. No upgrades except an extra 256 MB memory, WinXP, and wireless card. 14" 1600x1200 screen still looks great, although the 10 Gig HD is really starting to bother me. *salivating over an Inspiron 8600*
