Law&Order SVU is one the greatest social commentaries in all of cinema.

It teaches so much about crime, politics, and culture.

What do you think?

The problem with Law & Order SVU is it is the way the system should work. A feel good fantasy rather then a reality.

Reality is the police are rather likely to be the criminals committing the crimes dealt with in SVU:
https://www.thenation.com/article/archive/police-violence-we-arent-talking-about/
Comparing that data to FBI crime statistics indicates that “sexual assault rates are significantly higher for police when compared to the general population.”

And committing said crime with impunity, over and over:
https://www.cnn.com/2018/10/19/us/police-sexual-assaults-maryland-scope/index.html

and complaining about the police is a good way to end up dead:
https://www.wreg.com/news/local/wom...complaints-against-man-shot-dead-by-deputies/

the police after a long history of systemic violent crime (North Eastern Illinois University):

and form a violent organized criminal network sometimes called "the blue wall of silence".

The idea in Law and Order SVU is the police are good people working in a functioning system to bring justice. A dangerous and possibly lethal misconception for the children to learn.

In the sense of examining how popular culture creates a distorted view of the reality of things like policing, maybe.

People keep telling me The Wire is a realistic depiction of US society, but I never get round to watching it (feels too much like homework).

I finally got around to it a year ago or so, season one was great. Two was pretty good. Then it jumped the shark and it got kinda bad. I don't really understand the worship of the show.

Is it a realistic depiction of US society? Perhaps in some areas, shrug.

Don't forget that it teaches every police shooting is justified and investigating a police shooting is biased and unfair.

I enjoy SVU, but it provides a very distorted view of reality.

Nothing like a little copaganda to give the youth an extremely distorted view of the police and justice system.
