epox 9npa will give you a very good oc performance for a little less. you can get a $50 psu like the fortron 450w, add both saving from mobo and this and add it to the 7800gt purchase. for the harddrive, try to get a seagate. i would say get the benq dw1640 here, but you're on a budget.

Nice stuff. You could save yourself some money & get my X800XL instead of that 6800gt. SM 4.0 is ready to go, so 3.0 is about to be just as dated as the rest.

Eh, I'd be reluctant to skimp on the PSU. The epox board might be ok, but I'd get the DFI. I feel that the 6800GT, not a X800XL.

SM3.0 didn't help with FEAR. By the time the next gen heavy duty games which use SM3 heavily rolls around, 68xx card won't cut it SM3 or not. The X800XL however can still be relegated to HTPC duty in its old age since it has working WMV/HD acceleration unlike the permanently broken purevideo in 6800gt/ultra.

I would suggest 2gb of memory.

do not get the 6800gt.

get either a $250 radeon x800xl or a $400 7800gt.

the x800xl is faster than the 6800gt in many many games. the 7800gt is more powerful than both but also much more expensive.

so your choice

here's what i woudl personally change.

don't get a 6800gt. at MOST get an xl. they're around $30-45 less than that particular 6800gt, and we all know they pretty much perform the same with the exception of a few games (doom, half life, etc)

go with 2x 512 or 2x 1gb. that "performance ram" will only get you 5% more fps at most. NOT worth it imo.

and i agree with the above poster. look for a seagate if you can.

what case are you using?

yes

try not spending more than $100 on 1gb of total ram and more than $220 on 2gb of ram. for either case, I'd recommend Crucial.

if not Crucial, then either Corsair VS or OCZ Value will do

The reason I chose that ram is because the Motherboard I want has problems with ram like Corsair Valueselect.

To gauge the choice of your graphics card, might want to check here.

EDIT: Notice something I wanted to give my opinion on.

You said, you would go 7800GT, but you're short on funds now?

I would re-do the system build as follow;

3200+ Socket 939 $133

Epox N9PA $103

Tagan Power supply 480watt $68

AVC X2 OEM heatsink $21

Corsair Value Select PC3200 512MB $45 each or $90 for a pair (1GB)

$415

That's $103 difference from the components you already listed. That $103 + $300 you were going to spend on the 6800GT could be combined to purchase the 7800GT..

But, that's just my opinion.

Cut some money from the mobo (get EPoX 9nPA+ Ultra), PSU (Fortron 450W $50 @ Newegg), and RAM (Corsair ValueSelect). That should put you closer towards getting a 7800GT.

Also, with nVidia I knew to go with eVGA or BFG....

What company do i choose for the x800xl?

Diamond
Gigabyte
HIS
ASUS
MSI
Connect3D
ATI
POWERCOLOR
Sapphire
Abit

any.

all are very good. the good thing about ATI card vendors is that they are pretty much even in terms of quality

LINK

Which? The Ultra or the regular?

i'd get the Ultra. not too much more expensive. only about $7

I'll even knock $10 off of the card since I support the modding community, and it's an ATi branded card. It's really nice, but I have a new card on the way so this one needs to go quick. I take non credit card PayPal. 😉
