my cdrw. it's been getting finicky with the cheap cds lately (prime peripherals), but still burned fine with ty tdks, so i burned a test cd to see if it still worked on wednesday, and listed it on ebay day to raise money for the new yamaha crw-f1 (yes, i know it's a waste of money, but it's still fast & quiet and that tattoo thing is just too cool to let go. besides, i got my current cdrw for $50 when its street price was $180, if i can get the yamaha down to at least $75, then i'll get it. with a $20 mir good until march and all the plextors and tdks out now, i'm sure prices will drop :)).

anyway, so i tried putting a cd in it tonight but it just didn't read. in fact, it kinda sputtered and tried to speed up, but couldn't seem to make it. it reminded me a lot of my 15 year old golden retriever. then i tried to burn a cd (a tdk)... and it couldn't do it. after 5%, it gave all kinds of errors why it couldn't do it, but bottom line... it's dead. sigh. now i have to cancel my auction and i'm out like $35 or thereabouts (the average final price of completed auctions, God bless those ebayers who would spend $35 for a used 16 speed cdrw these days).

murderer!

j/k... look on hot deals forum... there are a few places that have cdrw's for $20 out the door (no rebate or coupon hassles) :)

I had a 16X Yamaha that died on me after 5 months

Yamaha was supposed to be one of the best.

Fortunately, I bought the warranty, brought it back, paid $20 more, and got the 40X plextor :D

BTW, I suggest buying the new 48X TDK burner. Unlike most burners, it burns a TRUE 48X through the entire CD. Cool!

the tdk takes about 2 1/2 minutes to burn a 650 mb cd. the full reveiw can be found here.
only thing i don't like about this drive is the noise. they said it was pretty loud, and coming from the yamaha 16, the last thing i want is a loud drive (all of my fans are panaflos, and i have a 'cuda iv. i'm done with loud computers!).
