I think IT hates me

I think my college IT dept hates me even more then they did before. They already don?t like me because 3 years ago I brought the whole network down.

Now I?m having issues with one of the Ethernet ports in my room. I have a single and there are 2 :) running 2 comps so its continent. Now one of these jacks will just turn itself off at random times of the day and wont come back on.

Doesn?t come back if I release and renew the IP it says ?can?t connect to DHCP server?. HAVE to restart to get it back. Now its not comp specific because it happens to whatever comp is using that jack

So I email them letting them know of the issue. They tell me that its most likely an IP conflict. Which I respond to as NO because it happens on 2 diff comps with 2 diff IPS the jack is the only thing it depends on. That was about 2 weeks ago. They said they would "look into it" sure they will. I have sent them an email every day since then letting them know when it happens. What time of day.... they haven?t responded yet. I?m beginning to think they never will.

release and renewing your ip should the exactly the same as restarting your computer, if they got a smart DHCP server then grab an IP, then set your computer up with that IP as static. problem solved unless you turn off your computer.

I did that and got hired to work for them the following semester :)

Well, being a nudge doesn't help, it just annoys people. Give them a couple days to respond to your request. If it's anything like my school's program, you are dealing with student workers and the person responsible for your building/zone keeps "duty hours" during the week.

To troubleshoot a jack problem, they have to get the diagnostic tool at a time when both you and they are available. The devices are expensive and so there aren't many of them, so they can be booked up for awhile.

And if they find the problem is not the data jack itself, then they have to call someone else to troubleshoot/repair the wire.

Buy a cheap hub, they don't care about you and your problems. They are most likely too busy playing Everquest and pretending to be working.

I didn't say it was the IP... you said you had trouble renewing your IP. If you set it up statically you never have to renew. But if you turn your computer off then someone else will grab that IP and then you'd have to get a new one.

If you set it up statically then your computer never has to get another IP. If the jack is working fine then this should solve your problem.

back in the day network security here sucked. and they didnt limit bandwidth. so i pushed open a port way up in the range and ran a remote FP server from mf friends T1 line, manages to use >75% of teh bandwidth myself for about a week straight. peaked at about 92% when it couldent handle it anymore and boom it came down for about a day

If they work in the IT Networking division at your school, chances are they can get around it. Think about your statement: "They (IT geeks) cant play Everquest because they (the same geeks) blocked the ports." Now, if you were an EQ addict, and you were in the Networking department, wouldnt YOU unblock yourself?
