I think I'm going to get the new AMD Phenom

I currently have an Asus M2N-E motherboard that is an AM2 board. From my understanding, Phenom will work on the older AM2 boards. I considered switching my motherboard and processor to Intel, but that would be too expensive. I think I might just drop $200 on an AMD quad core. Would this be a good idea? I really need the extra horsepower of the two extra cores.

Yeah that makes sense, just make sure you update to the latest BIOS which supports Phenom.

brxndxn, those type of comments help no one. I know you are being sarcastic but still...

your seriously better off going intel at this moment.

Phenom doesnt overclock as well, if your not overclocking both systems, a Q6600 will stomp a stock phenom clock per clock.

And even then, i would wait for penryn since your so close to launch. You'll see big differences in encoding time when you push that G0 to a modest 3.2ghz as well.

Isn't the Q6600 cheaper than the Phenom quads out at the moment? And it STILL performs better than the one priced around the same as it.

There's really no reason to go AMD. Not being a fanboy, just stating sad facts.

It being a sad fact is not enough to save you from being a fanboy these days :p

Honestly the difference between Phenom and a Q6600 is not night and day. If you can get over being slower in this or that, any quad is still faster for such work than a dual core. Besides you already have an AM2 board, I'd be lying if I said the reason I went from AMD was not atleast 70% because I was stuck on socket 939.

so....intel is cheaper, yet faster. but the OP wants to go phenom because he has an am2 mobo...

hard choice. seriously....

Nope! Not the Phenom 9500, which is $200 @ newegg. I would personally go with the Q6600 but if you want to go budget to stay with your current board, i'd say go for the Phenom 9500. It's a good deal.

Kick the AM2 to the curb and get a good sub-$100 Mobo for C2D and a new CPU. Total price for the upgrade $175-350 (E2xx to Q6600).

The Phenom 9500 at $200 is a great deal compared to doling out $350 for the Q6600 rig.

Phenom is a nice upgrade for people who already have an AM2 motherboard.

Out of curiosity, is video editing the type of task that would trigger the Phenom TLB bug?

Possibly.

I'm sure there will be a patch for it. I've already heard of one for one of the Linux builds where you don't even have to flash the BIOS.

it's also supposed to have much better performance than the bios patch.

I'm surprised at all the Phenom bashing here. After the latest price cuts (the 9500 is $200 at Newegg) it represents excellent value, and in the case of the OP it will be an easy drop in upgrade.

I would stick with the phen b/c he has the board already. A little performance boost is not worth the extra 100+ he would have to spend to get a decent intel board + the extra cost for the cpu (depending on what board he would want of course- could be more expensive). Unless of course he is ok with spending that extra money...

I wouldn't recommend anyof the current-gen Phenoms if only becaue of a). generally poor BIOS support for Phenom on AM2 boards right now and b). the TLB bug.

Wait for B3, and look into your board's BIOS options before pulling the trigger. Granted, Asus has been pretty public with their intentions to support Phenom on some (if not all) of their AM2 boards. Luckily you aren't stuck with a board like mine . . . Abit has all but guaranteed that they will not support Phenom with a BIOS update on my NF-M2 nView.

You would make a terrible mistake to get either the Phenom 9500 or 9600, they currently take an additional 10% performance hit due to problems that are supposed to be corrected in the Phenom 9700 or 9900... avoid the 9500 and 9600

Aren't they cutting prices big time on the TLB bugged Phenoms? Get one of those for cheap, or wait for the 9550/9650.
