Getting in good physical condition and getting some sort of medical certifications (CPR, AED, first responder/EMT training) would be a good place to start.

Not to steal the thread but is anyone here a volunteer firefighter? What sort of training did you go through and how often are you "volunteering" ?

If you can't get work as a full time firefighter I hear that its good to become a volunteer one and work your way in. Thats what some friends have done. That isn't my intent though (don't want it as my day job).

Most volunteers don't need training, just go out on calls wit the local station and start learning. Thats how most do it. Emt training is what I will be doing after college and then a career firefighter. I think.
