I think I'm going to ask for a bigger raise this year in my review ...

LOL... I worked for a very large, multi national corporation that made billions of dollars each year... yet never had any money for raises... 2 - 2.5% annual.... average. If you got promoted, you got more... maybe 6-7% total... but I think they stopped "promoting" people a long time ago.

Now they just lay people off (since they're "struggling" financially) and then shuffle the rest.

Meanwhile... the CEO's "compensation" went up 23% to $27,000,000 (including "bonus").

So, while I was getting laid off, CEO was crusing around in the corporate jet and private limo... value not included in the $27,000,000.

Edit:

BTW OP... good job, I think you handled it correctly by doing your homework and being prepared to plead your case.... not just walking in and demanding a raise out of the blue.

Hmm sounds like where I work... in fact I wouldn't be surprised if the place you worked is where I work now.

Good luck!

I asked for a $10/hr raise, and got a $5/hr raise, no questions asked. I'll settle for that.

hah wow I forgot about this thread :p

anyways I talked to him last monday and it went well. he asked me if I had a # in mind and I told him that I did research on the average in our area doing software engineering and he agreed that it sounded reasonable. i also pleaded my case more that I am a valuable asset to the company and that I have been taking charge of my area of expertise and made it my own, and he agreed and told me that the higher ups agreed as well.

he then said that he sees there is a gap between what I make now and what the industry is moving at and that he definitely believes that the gap can be filled. he also said that he see's potential for me here because I have social skills which many engineers here don't, and we talked about how even though we wouldn't say names, there are engineers here that have been working here for 10+ years but they will never see managerial positions for the fact they don't have any people skills.

we also talked about how now he wants to get me into more challenging projects and get me out of this "beginner" type of projects I've been doing since I got here. I told him I am ready for the challenge that lies ahead because when the answer is not straight forward, it usually motivates me more and drives me to get it done.

he told me he's going to talk to the higher ups about me getting a larger raise this year and that he wouldn' tknow the final decision until we receive our letters about our raise towards the end of hte month.

so basically I should expect to get a bigger raise this year but I won't know how much until we receive our letters towards the end of this month.

Tom Smykowski: Well-well look. I already told you: I deal with the god damn customers so the engineers don't have to. I have people skills; I am good at dealing with people. Can't you understand that? What the hell is wrong with you people?
