With Military shooters that is...

I have never despised a genre as much as I feel towards FPSs right now. The quality just continues to blow it's brains out by continually smashing content against a block of solid steel covered in lava.

So DICE, Infinity Ward...damn you for wrecking your own franchises you cheap sell out ****s.

Now that I've gotten that out the way, excuse me while I find something enjoyable to play.

Summoned, I come...to support your thread. Let's hope the next BF game returns to quality and not lowered thresholds.

I've been playing CoD 4 with my friends LAN parties lately and I've been enjoying it. I've enjoyed it so much, in fact, that just a couple weeks ago I decided to start playing online again. So I broke down and bought MW3 (only payed $20 for it though, would never pay $60 for a CoD title). It's fun, but... holy cow, you could tell me I'm playing MW1 and I would never know the difference.

It's amazing how IW/Activision can release the exact same product every year, sell it for $60, and people will still eat it up like hotcakes. You can at least give credit to DICE for using a new engine. CoD's been using the Quake 3 engine since pretty much forever, and it shows. Feels like the series is stuck in time.

Don't get me wrong, I've been playing it for several hours, and it's fun, but it also feels very stale. Also, even though MW3 has dedicated servers, NO ONE uses them. Maybe the average CoD player isn't intelligent enough to know what a dedicated server is. Everytime a host disconnects, and the entire game has to pause for a moment to find a new host, I always say "and this is why we should be using dedicated servers, people..." sometimes people agree with me, but still, the only way to play is by going non-dedicated. Uggh.

I wonder how long it will be until CoD dies, or until people finally realize what they're doing everytime they buy a CoD game. I also think it's ridiculous that Activision is releasing 20-something DLC packs over the next few months. It will be interesting to see how many people lap that up too.

It's funny; I never thought I would buy MW3 before BF3, seeing as I'm a Battlefield fan. But the whole EA/Origin-only/banning-fiasco kind of turns me away from it (not that Activision is much better, but I do like that they've embraced Steamworks).

[/rant]

Anyway... so what games do you plan on playing now? Maybe some L4D or Killing Floor? Red Orchestra 2? Nuclear Dawn? There'a always TF2. ;)

If you're thinking of taking a break from shooters altogether, come play some Trackmania with us. There are always people on the Giantbomb server (unless we change servers for some reason). It's a (small) but really nice community. Fun, arcadey, fast-paced racing action.

Have you tried the original Operation Flashpoint or ARMA II, both are substantially better "military shooters" in the fact they contain more substance & aren't tailored to point and shoot.

Ha, now that you mention it, I just might do that. My 360 Controller for Windows is coming in the mail soon( I can't drive with a keyboard worth for ***), so I might just drop by.

I have a lot of games on my Steam list that I've been putting aside. Gonna try to get in and finish Deus Ex: HR, Far Cry 2, Dark Siders, gonna play some Mafia II DLC I never got around to, TF2, a bunch of Lara Croft games, I also had a lot of fun with Monday Night Combat and Arkham City. Maybe some Civ 5 and a couple of PS1 retros...!

 I've wasted more time between those two games than anything else. It's a totally different experience from any of the COD or BF games.

Those games are amazing if you're into walking to some distant objective for 10 minutes and then getting shot through 500 feet of bushes by an enemy you can't even see.

Arma 2 had a lot of potential but the AI was just so horrid I had to stop playing.

OP have you played red orchestra 2?

^ this.

I more or less stopped playing First person shooters, and like poster quoted, still a happy gamer as ever.

I still play all the other stuff, ei Sims/RTS/RPGs/MMOs/.... the minor stuff like TowerDefense games, puzzels, even some platform/fighter games for consols ect.

I've been going down the same road, but not leaving FPS's altogether. The last CoD I truly enjoyed was CoD4, after that its gone way downhill. I don't mind BF3 but I never really get the feeling of wanting to play for more than 30 minutes.

I've been playing alot of TF2 and Counter-Strike again as well as the Tribes:Ascend Beta and the Black Light Retribution Beta. There are so many great FPS's out there that aren't BF3 or MW3.

As long as people keep buying up their crap, they will continue to make things even crapier. More money, less effort.

Imagine if you were an employee who lacked any morals, dignity or honor. And you found that you can still get the same paycheck even if you come in to work later and leave earlier. Wouldn't you keep coming in later and leaving earlier until finally the employer puts his or her foot down?

I couldn't really get into arma 2, the game made me feel dizzy and sick after 30 minutes, anybody else had that problem? I tried playing around with some graphics settings but didn't end up fixing the issue.

It's not different than Madden.

How much do folks expect a series to be changed? It's popular not because a company forces you to buy and play it, it's because it has a hook that people enjoy. Companies would be stupid to change the formula.

How often do car models really change? They get an upgrade or two each year, but their essentially the same car and you WILL have people that will trade up every year or two just because the new model is out. I have a boss that does it with her BMW's.

I've disliked any kind of FPS since, well, the days of Doom. I had fun with games like Dark Forces and such, MoH from time to time, but it has always been my least favorite. ....except Borderlands. Love that game.

Anyway, OP: does this mean that you are going to update the original post in your Skyrim thread?

BF3 is awesome, what's the deal...

Awesome graphics, awesome immersion, lots of unlocks, and the like, none of which matters to those who emphasize other things like large maps and a slower game pace (NOT ARMA PACE in case you're going to say something about 10 minutes between shots).

There are those who like BF3 and good for them; but the fact is previous BF games emphasized different things and those of us who enjoyed that are looking for a return.

BF3 will still be there even if 2143/BF4 return to the old formula. That's what BF3 lovers tell us, is that BF2 is still here for us...

I never play anything but!

I'm comparing BF3 CQ pace to BF2 CQ pace...and I would say even compared to BC2 conquest although it must be noted BC2 has 32 max, which brings us to the fact that the game simply isn't designed for 64 players. Large spread out maps with proper recoil and deviation that prevent long range easymode spraydowns is what we need but do not have. The pace is too fast both in terms of short time between engagements and short time to kill.

And that's OK for the people that like this, all I'm saying is that when new consoles come out, hopefully we can get true large maps again and gameplay that encourages closing the distance to your enemy instead of killing from medium or longer range regardless of weapon type.

Interesting, I find CQ far too slow for my tastes...I would like to see some much bigger maps though, that would be neat.

I don't think that is a problem though.

If they would just focus more on 3-4 player co-op missions. I'm definitely looking forward to Borderlands 2 since it's a) not a military FPS b) has 4 player co-op c) has different classes with leveling
