I think I'm done buying on eBay/used for most tech stuff

I used to have the mentality that I should find the best deal possible for any computer part, be that on eBay, or in FS/T here on Anandtech, or wherever. Recently though I've moved away from that. One reason, warranties. Most warranties for tech products are non-transferrable and with having bought everything new for my last upgrade, I realize that I really like knowing that EVERYTHING is covered for 3-5 years (some things one year). Basically it guarantees (assuming the manufacturer is decent) that if issues ever arise and you know it's due to faulty hardware, you *should* have your system up and running again in 1-2 weeks with a good RMA process.

Just nice reassurance that has caused me to start buying purely from normal retailers. Anyone else feel similarly?

I never buy used. God only knows what people do to stuff, I learned long ago that there's no limit to human stupidity.

I bought a used 54g wireless NIC from Fry's for $14. That's a great investment, because it has no moving parts, and probably won't fail. Works great too.

Just don't get used harddrives and other sensitive electronics as PurdueRy stated.

i will NEVER buy used pc parts unless i know the person selling it and i know how they took care of their stuff. even then i'd be kind of hesitant.

i will buy NEW parts off ebay though, just not used.

So is most of the used stuff. There's to many AOL morons on ebay pushing the prices up past retail, or market price in the case of old stuff.

I wouldn't even buy new on eBay, because you still don't get the warranty (unless the seller is a reseller and not an end user).

do u have to give ebay a cut of the money...does ebay make like 10% or whatever the amount may be on evry sale?

I buy everything at small local shops. In big cities it's not really that hard to find comparable prices to e-tailers on mainstream componentry. Plus, an RMA usually just entails going back to the store for an exchange.

edit. I've got no problems buying used componentry from a local shop neither. I sell quite a few used parts to a couple shops, so I know their quality testing is thorough.

Honestly, the only things I buy on ebay are the things I can't find anywhere else: which consists only of computer parts that haven't been in production for years. Its an exception to the rule that you get a good deal buying something on ebay over other online retailers. I've gotten a decent deal on a pulled video card awhile back but for the most part I'm just disappointed when I use the search there.
