i think i'm completely lost..

hope its ok to post in this forum, but i'm very desperate for the answer.

i built an htpc and it includes a motherboard with an onboard nvidia gpu and a hauppage pvr-500. i want to be able to have my htpc give output to my tv and be able to record, watch tv shows, etc. i'm not worried about the software aspect at all, but rather the hardware aspect. its an analogue tv with s-video and composite inputs.

i assume i attached composite cables from my hauppage pvr-500 to the back of my tv? does this sound right? sry i think i sound like an idiot, heh. thanks!

You connect your Video Card Out to your TV.

not from your Hauppauge PVR card. That only has Inputs AFAIK

ooh ok. so here's all i got:

so basically would I have to find some kind of vga cable that can connect to my tv? my tv has an input for an antenna, an s-video input, and three sets of composite audio/video jacks. Two of the composite audio/video jacks are for input and one is for output.

So what would be the best approach? Like a vga to composite video or vga to s-video? I assume if I had like a vga to composite video then I would hook up the vga cable to my vga port on my computer and the composite video end to one of my tv's composite video in and then a composite audio/video cable from the tv's audio/video out to my hauppage input?

or the other approach would be to get a vga to s-video, hook that up respectively and then do the same thing with the composite cables from my tv's out to my hauppage? is this correct?

It looks like you're using a built in video card on the mobo.

get a new vid card with TV out Feature and connect it that way.

i'm not too sure of how many tv's have a vga input.

But that's because it's a fancy pants HDTV type thing 😉

But anyway to the OP, I also think you'd be better off getting a card with tv out. MUCH less of a hassle :thumbsup:

Umm...Get a new TV

Umm...Get a new TV

haha, not an option right now. the whole project thing is kinda due tomorrow and i just need to like make a video presentation of it or something. plus my tv is a 36" so i'd have to get an hdtv that's at least a 36". but i definitely will get an hdtv in the near future. 🙂

tv-out = s-video?

It can be, and it sounds like that's the best you're going to get with your TV.

Yes, s-video counts at tv out.
S-video is interlaced, and the quality of the signal can't rival that of DVI or VGA, however, if you are just using a standard definition TV, s-video works great.

Find out if your motherboard has AGP or PCI Express
Then get either an AGP or PCI Express video card that has s-video.

There are regular PCI options as well if you don't have a PCI Express or AGP slot, however, they are suboptimal due to PCI bus bandwidth restrictions.


For the record, I've got an old school Rear Projection TV (standard definition), and I have an old AGP Geforce 4 TI4200 and Hauppage PVR 250 for my HTPC. I'm running MythTV under Knoppix (used Knoppmyth.) I've got the HTPC connected via S-video, and it's just fine for regular SD content.

My smaller HDTV upstairs does have slightly better image quality (using component outputs from a progressive scan DVD player), however, I have no complaints about the s-video when it comes to TV/Movie playback.

It sucks for gaming though. It's also not the best for text .... (though the screen with all the listings on it is pretty clear with s-video, at least for me)

alright so i think i got the s-video stuff down. what about the tv card though? i basically hook up the tv's composite out to my tv card's composite in and that's that? after i do both of these i can start recording/watching tv and stuff?

damnit! i have an agp card with an s-video out, but my board has a pci-e slot. i'm screwed tomorrow.. too bad walmart doesn't card video cards..

Your tuner card has a coax, so hook up the coax cable to it. 😵

I guess I can stop for now though. I thought i had a card that would work, but my 6800gs only has some kind of hdtv out, not an s-video out. Godamnit.. Oh well..

That sounds weird, I would think if it has HDTV out it has or can have s-video out. Do you have a link to the specs or the model #?
