Hitachi CML174SXW

I currently am running dual monitors with a Dell P991 and an older Gateway 17 inch. The dell which runs at 1600X1200 @ 75hz and the 17 inch runs at 1152X864 @ 72 hz. I use the 19 inch for everything, Internet browsing, games and such. And the 17 inch to watch TV ( have a tuner card ). Everything works fine

But after searching and reading reviews, an LCD may be a sweet upgrade. I can replace the 17 inch monitor with the new LCD and get more resoultion and use the LCD for internet browsing and such. ( cause I have read that LCDs are better for your eyes ). And plus I hate lugging my 19 inch around to lan parties....

Sound good ??

So far my Dell 1900PF has performed exceptionally well for gameplay. It replaced a Samsung 900NF, and I have no intention of turning back.

I've got a Planar dirt cheap from Dell with a bunch of coupons. Very rich display, the only draw back is it doesn't have DVI. Planar has a good support policy offering free 2nd day Air replacement...

I have a Samsung 15" LCD... works fine, looks good. Yeah, LCDs are definitely better for your eyes, they don't flicker. But one of the comments above is WRONG, LCDs can be good for gaming. Do a little research before you buy the LCD. Find out what the response time for the LCD is, if it is 25ms or greater, don't buy it. If it is 20ms or less, you shouldn't notice any of the "ghosting" that plagues cheaper LCDs. I think one of the threads somewhere around here lists some of the LCDs that has a response time of less than 16ms... sweet.

I would jump on the CML174 bandwagon if it were 18 or 19". :frown:

Edit: I know there'll be other 16ms monitors on the market soon, but have any of these companies announced larger versions? Or plan to announce?

But what are advantages of having 18 or 19'' in LCDs ?

The max resoultion is the same as the Hitachi I do think

Even with the equivalent resolution, I'd prefer the larger screen size. I've got a 17" (16"viewable) CRT right now, and if I'm going to dish out 6 large for a new monitor, I want more than 1" increase in viewable space.

Edit: By the way, your link goes to the CML170B+, not CML174.

I am always amazed at people that insist on viewing at such crazy resolutions like 1600 x 1200 - you guys must sit right on top of that monitor to see the images. Is there any real benefit to using resolution that makes everything so teeny tiny?

An 18 or 19 LCD with the same resoution as one of it smaller counterparts would mean to me that it would be easier on your eyes for the simple reason that larger screen equals larger images...even if it is just an inch more viewable, sure makes a difference if you're viewing it from more than an arms length...

My eyes have adjusted to 1600X1200 on my 19 inch CRT just fine. And no I am not right on top of that monitor :p

1280X1024 should be a fine resoultion :)

I run 1280 1024, with small fonts loaded it is a little small all you have to do is set the sytem fonts to large 125% it looks great plus you still get the larger res.

Personally, I like my LCD better than my CRT 19" EVEN for gaming. The colours are much smoother and more uniform. It's just so difficult for me to go back to CRTs...I even scoff at flat-tubes ;).

Please someone reply who has a samsung 191t or viewsonic vx900. These have got to be the top lcds out there right now. I am flabberghasted that two review sites )modfactor and envynews) say that the 191t is great for gaming (and they actually mention the games they played), while other sites like hytekcomputer, bytesector, and anandtech say to beware because it has bad ghosting effects. I am inclined to believe the ghosting isn't too bad. Does anyone have experience with this monitor and can share their gaming experiences? Thanks

It was interesting when I heard that a 19' lcd running at 1280x1024 has the same dot pitch (.294) as a 15" lcd running at 1024x768 (.295 i believe). So, if you've ever looked at a nice new iMac 15" lcd, the 19" lcds will look just as clear and visible from further away as those 15 inchers.

I don't own either of those monitors, but I have seen the 191t in action and I did notice ghosting. It wasn't that bad. It was better than most LCDs, but it was noticeable to me. The Viewsonic I have not seen.

some 19" are 1600x1200 which is better when scaling to 640x480, 800x600 or 1024x768.

17", 18" and some 19" are 1280x1024, which is not at the normal 4:3 aspect.
Just for internet is not a problem.

good random info kingofcomputer

I always use 1280x1024 though, and its fine, not sure why it wouldn't be great for everything, even besides internet

why, i have a viewsonic vx900, and i like it heapum good--most for word, IE, but also gaming--i haven't noticed any real ghosting in any games. to be fair, the games i play are pretty few and far between--jkii, sofii, and some others. i wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

Ok, so why the hell does no one ever talk about the VX series of LCDs from Viewsonic? I wonder

i'm not quite sure . . .

i usually don't recommend the vx series because it has the on-board microphone/speakers, which i can live without. The vg series doesn't, but it also doesn't have dvi until you get to 19"

I got the vx because it was the same price as the vg, and because the samsung monitors were out of stock :)

I have a 191T (Dell 1900FP) that I got back in April. It is, by far, the best computer-related purchase I've ever made. I haven't found anything to bitch about in the 8 months I've been using it.

I exclusively play FPSes and notice no ghosting. I use the DVI input, I don't know if maybe that's why things look good to me but not to the people complaining about ghosting (i.e. - maybe analog in = more ghosting?? I've never seen this situation addressed in any monitor review).

What specific games do you play RalfHutter? I've heard NOLF2 causes ghosting with this monitor (from a thread that talked about the dell fp1900).

Rhombuss, what kind of LCD do you have?

Does anyone expect Samsung to release a 192t sometime? I'd guess it will be like the 172t, and I haven't heard a SINGLE report of ghosting with that monitor, while I've heard mulitple reports of occasional but tolerable ghosting with the 191t, while others never experienced any ghosting.

MOHAA, SOF2, Hitman 2, Ghost Recon, Op Flashpoint, RTCW, all since I got the 1900FP.

I installed NOLF2 a few days ago but haven't fired it up yet. It seems that it won't run at my native res (1280 x 1024) which would make it the first game I've played on this monitor that won't run at native res. Highest it will go is 1153 x 860 (if I remember correctly). That'll make it look a little funky to begin with.
