I think I want to consider low-end X299. Advice?

Thinking KBL-X. I have always had a thing for high ST clocks. (G3258 @ 4.0-4.3Ghz, G4400 w/BCLK OC to 4.5Ghz, etc.)

What's the cheapest component list for getting into X299? Thinking cheapest ASRock ATX board, and just maybe, KBL-X will go on firesale once CFL-S hits.

Also, what are the odds of a CFL-X 6C/12T CPU, for $400 or less?

At first I was thinking about CFL, but it seems evident that Z370 will be a one trick pony, while X299 ought to see one more generation of CPUs, if history can still be a guide. This has me reconsidering whether to get back into HEDT.

There will be corei3 kabylake x,

And maybe in the future there will be Pentium and Celeron

EDIT: the cheapest x299 will only support kaby lake x, so it will only have dual channel memory and 16 pcie.

In that case why not just get Coffee Lake and a z370 board instead when they come out?

Low. Reviewers puked all over KBL-X and told everyone not to buy it, so I bet you CFL-X will be cancelled.

May I ask why KBL-X? It just seems so pointless specially for someone looking for deal on CPU's like yourself. If it's the platform it seems like you would be better off with something like a 1900x setup (though the CPU being $150-200 more) either waiting for the CFL offerings. Besides the cheapest board basically being a 1151 board in features with no upgradability there is nothing in the KBL-X line except about a 100-200MHz extra OC that makes them worth anything over their 1151 counterparts.

I've never had a "5Ghz" CPU. Not yet, anyways. I'm hoping that KBL-X is an easy ticket to the "5Ghz club".

I haven't seen any sign of Core i3 KL-X except a fake photo.

Easiest and cheapest ticket to 5GHz would be to purchase a pre tested and delidded 7700k or 7600K from Silicon Lottery. Cheaper platform costs, cheaper CPU, actual assurance of target clock speed.

I think the thrill is in doing it yourself. :D

I get that, I really do, but it would be one thing to say i'd like to get a i7 and OC it within an inch of it's life. It's another to say "I want a 5GHz" cpu. Specially if it's the difference between getting a 7700k and a much better and cheaper platform but knowing 5GHz is unlikely without the Delid, and getting a 7740X that is horribly out of place on 299x and require a board that basically has no upgrade options. The 7740 or 7640 are more likely because of the larger heatspreader to hit 5GHz without delid, but it's not worth the rest of the platform.

I'll be surprised if the 8350K can't hit 5.0, though.

That's what I'd try.

No, it's on 14nm++, which should do better on power and clocks, theoretically.
Theoretically. But considering that "increased" IPC was actually increased clock speed on KBL. I am guessing it is more about a slight increase in density so they don't cut margins too much when upping the core count across the board. I expect it to possibly clock a little better, but I don't know if the small die with toothpaste will help it out. All the Clockspeed issues with KBL have to do with thermals and not with the process itself. Which is why the delid is almost always needed to get over 5GHz.

There's no reason to expect any IPC increase. Just better power numbers and higher clocks. Maybe factor in a little better cooling with a slightly bigger die under the IHS.

I wasn't saying we should hope for it. Just that the KBL was supposed to be faster, but it was all in clock speeds. Though it could clock higher than SL most of it was just eating away at a lot of the SL OC range. Just saying I wouldn't keep my hopes too high up. I think it will have a reasonable time hitting 5GHz, just wouldn't consider it a certainty.

My recollection is that a lot of people jumped to conclusion with the report that KBL mobile was faster than SL mobile. This was actually due to higher clocks and the ability to stay at those clocks longer. Intel never indicated an IPC increase, IIRC. A lot of people suffered from "transference" to desktop KL chips. :)
