Sounds like it, anyway..going to look into it further tomorrow (2004 Subaru Forester XT, right rear). I can get SMK for $40ish and Timken for $56ish. Any recommendations?
 
Happens, usually at high mileage.
Usually lack of lube, shock, or not propperly adjusted.
Go Timken if you are feeling flush, SMK should work just as well but I don't know that. Been a while since I was in industry, it is.
If its common expect they are too close to max loading or cheaping out on lube quality/quantity.

There have been many cases of sub 60k failures. Don't think failures in your model Forester were that common though...
 
Timken. Especially since they are a local company.

Bearing failure is one of those fun statistical things. There may not be a problem with the wheel bearing, you may just be unlucky enough to get a bearing that fails earlier. Bearing ratings are typically done on a ~99% pass rating, i.e. 99% of a given type of bearing will reach its rated life.
