Basically one of my less than productive employees is friends with one of my bosses. I have been riding the employee to try to get his sales numbers up. Well his buddy (my boss) called up our corporate HQ and told them some things that were complete and total lies. Now I have 4 different bosses asking me about it and riding me like I have horns and a saddle. The worst part is that corporate has already been eyeballing me since one of my employees did something that was completely against the rules and could end up costing the company thousands (the employee I spoke of earlier was in on the deal too.)

So the deal is that I could fire the employee for numerous reasons. I could also make my boss's life a living hell. I also have the option of just waiting for corporate to fire the employee because of his numbers. Right now I am so pissed that I want to mess with both of them without them knowing it, but I know that isn't the right thing to do.

I guess I am just venting here...but it sucks that I am basically getting crapped on because my boss is friends with a complete and total loser.

UPDATE:
My guy didnt show up today, this is 2 days in a row he his missed unexused. If he misses tomorrow for any reason other than his head fell off, he is done.

Final UPDATE:
The employee no longer works for our company. That is all.

Wow, that sucks.

Maybe you should have a heart-to-heart with your boss? Guess that would depend on how good of friends they are ...

that's the way it works. your best course of action is to be best buddies with said employee, you got burned man and he has more power than you.

sorry, it sucks.

What he did crossed the line. I doubt I could have a peaceful conversation with him. He went over my head by about 4 steps. We are supposed to be a team, we help each other out. That is all done now.

Find a way to connect your loser employee and his failure to perform to your boss and get them both fired, then take your boss's position, get a new title and a raise.

said employee can be done tomorrow if I wanted. His buddy (my boss) was in the wrong. Our GM agrees with me, but doesn't want me to do anything drastic. I am thinking I should just throw both of them under the bus and let the cow manure hit the fan.

I turned down his job, more resposibilty for less money. We are comission based, and I make more than my boss.

Ahhh, I see.

Ok, so how about you have a talk with your bosses above you/him, then?

Shrug. Most people are pretty reasonable. Communication is the key. If he told lies, I wouldn't just sit around and let people believe them.

Ouch. The situation seems a little too close and personal to you for you to fire him for this alone. Come up with a solid justification and THEN fire his ass.

What do you guys sell, if you don't mind my asking.

We sell electronics and appliances. I could fire the guy for at least 4 different things. They don't like us firing people though, unemployment and all. He has 10 more days to get his numbers up before he is fired though...but that still leaves the boss issue.

doesn't matter what the truth is.

The game is all that matters. Perception is key and if he is buddy with your boss there isn't much you can do. 'cept be buddies with your boss's boss.

Fire him.

Seriously, it's the only way. If you are going to be held responsible for his actions (and, you are his manager, so you ARE responsible for his actions) and don't like what he's doing, FIRE HIM.

If he screws up again, nobody is going to care whether you *wanted* to fire him before or not, just that you didn't.

not the wisest course of action.

1) fire, fight with HR, get sh!t on by your boss for eternity and probably evetually fired
2) make him quit

#2 is the correct course.

I know that game, and I play it better than anyone else. The guys at HQ that matter like me, the problem is that people that have never heard my name before are on my tail. Our GM will stick up for me, his boss will stick up for me, the problem is that this elevated beyond any of them. It is becoming more clear that this is going to be a him or me type situation. I have a kid to feed, I am going to handle my business.

Are you guys wholesale or retail? Shift work? Can you force him to take crappy shifts because of low numbers to force him to quit?

EDIT: I can send him home, but the times that I have done that his buddy overrode me and had him stay.

i'd fire them, sound worthless and sounds like you're in the position to do it, bring them both into the room and congradulate them, for being dumbasses, then tell them they're fired
