I think I may have fudged up my computer (UPDATED)

OK, here's the deal. I had bent one of my CPU pins a while back but bent it back and everything was working fine for a few months.

Now, everytime I do a cold boot, the 1st 1 or 2 tries, the screen is blank, the monitor light is on, but there's no Windows XP bootup screen. All I saw, was my LILO bootscreen, I select Windows, and then "loads" but nothing. I just see the HD activity LED.

On the third try, I see the Windows boot screen, but it hangs, and I have to press the restrt button.

On the 5th try, it starts fine and the computer is stable.

This is all at stock settings, lol.

That can't have anything to do with the CPU. Basically, the CPU will either work fine, it will be unstable, or it won't work. Your problem couldnt' be caused by teh CPU being unstable or being dead, so it must be something else. Sounds like yoru install of windows became corrupt. Check all the cables too to so if any are loose.

Is there anything you did to the computer right before this happened?

Other than the bent pin (which was fixed), no...

I'm gonna try this. Tomorrow, from a cold boot, I'll start Linux first instead and see if it boots up ok fine on the first try. I guess it's Windows related then if it works fine.

Windows works fine, after like 10 reboots or so... lol.

you could try flashing the BIOS with the same or newer version as you have now, just to see if that will freshen things up a bit, then you could try re-seating the CPU, and RAM maybe, then you could move onto a re-install of windows if all of that fails to see if that would solve the problem

Actually a messed up windows OS cant be it....Sounds like it wont even post sometimes and that would be more like a bios/mobo issue....

Could be a faulty ram stick or a faulty dimm slot...move those around....

Nope, it POSTs all the time and LILO boot manager pops up and I select Windows. The rest is predictable...

1. 1-2 consecutive boots - Screen goes blank. HD Activity LED blinks. No picture, but monitor is still on.

2. 2-3 consecutive boots - Windows bootup screen appears but hangs there. There's HD activity during the 1st and 2nd pass of the progress indicator moving along the screen, but hangs after that.

3. Windows boots up fine and stable.

OK...I am confused...what is a LILO boot manager???

allows me to select either Windows or Linux on boot. lol. It's a boot manager. That's not the problem.

That's why I said I was going to try Linux first thing tomorrow when I get back from school on a cold boot. Only happens on a cold boot, most of the time... I'll get back to you tomorrow. Oh, and, Duvie, one question mark will suffice. 🙂

Grrr, did a cold boot of Linux and it started on the first try. Must be a corrupt Windows filesystem. Grrr. This pisses me off. Anything else I can do, other than reformat?

Boot from the windows CD just like your going to install, at the first prompt for "Repair" or "Install" pick "Install" then it will search for previous installs, pick your current windows installation. Then it will ask if you want to "overwrite" or "repair" the current installation, pick "repair". This works most of the time and it preserves you installed programs and your data.
