Hmm, I heard creating a partition dedicated to running just the operating system can help system performance. Well I needed a reformat, so I gave it a go. I guess I wasnt thinking clearly as I allocated 5 gigs for windows. After getting it up and running I only have 360 megs left on the partition? Did I fcuk up bad? Or is it a matter of relocating the program files folder with all the movie maker etc to my other partition? I would prefer not to format again, as I just got everything set up nicely.

Any ideas?

Its probably hibernation file and virtual memory... you can move the virtual memory to the 2nd drive and turn off hibernation should save you 2-3x your memory size on the C: drive.

No you can't just simply move your programs folder to another partition. Since you originally installed all your programs to your C:\ partition, all the registry settings are going to reference that drive (partition). Your best alternative is to use Partition Magic to resize your XP partition as noted by Lastguy.

Thanks for the reply's guys. I checked out the PM website, quite a steep price. I am contemplating reformatting unless of course bluestealth's idea works 😀

Hello Slimline,
Once I made the same mistake.
My OS parttition was very small. And my friend advised me to try Acronis Disk DirectorAcronis Disk Director. It increased the size of my OS partition by shrinking another. So I didn't have to re-format or re-install anything. Since that time, my PC has been working charming.

5 gigs is more than enough for an XP install partition. Even with the page file on there it shouldn't be taking up more than 3 gigs. Did you install any software to that parition? It sounds like you did although you mentioned Movie Maker and that comes with Windows doesn't it? Bluestealth's idea of moving the page file to the second partition is an easy way to free up some space. Other than that though, you need to unsinstall any software and reinstall it to your other partition.

You will definitely need more than 5 GB if you plan to install your programs onto the same partition. On my 10 GB partition, I've already used up 8 GB with XP and all my programs loaded. You need a little wiggle room for the swap file to work properly.
