From a personal perspective I like the more simple, professional look of the forum with a limited and consistent set of avatars. Letting people upload would be like going from Facebook to MySpace. Overall that's just a personal preference though, and it wouldn't stop me from visiting here. I think it's just been the rule for a long time that moderating avatars would be too difficult, and that's from when the forum was much smaller than it is now.

Why do you need to memorize a name and a personality? That just leads to personal attacks or as you might whine about, ad hominem arguments. Each post should be read and responded to on content alone. There's nobody here I agree with on every point and I'm not going to rubber stamp approval on a post based on author alone. If it's a good, intelligent, useful post the author gets a cookie, if it's stupid it gets smacked.

I agree with this proposal (sorry about the res). I think the forums look a lot cleaner with the preset, drawn images, but I think the OP is on to something, and it'd be worth it.
