well, this might sound kind of stupid.
i was trying to make a circuit with a resistor and a led diode, attaching a wire to the 5V plug that feeds hard drives and cdroms. and at first the diode lighted up, but then the plug sent out a big spark and the computer stopped working. so i had to switched it on again. at first i all seemed to work flawlessly but then i realized that my hard drive now it's only capable of reading data, but it can't write data.
in fact i tried to format the hard drive and it just began like it was formatting it but when it finished doing it, anything changed.
anyone can help me pleeease???
the hard drive was 3 days old!!!

<< You're right, that does sound stupid. >>

Agreed.

However, perhaps it is only the cable or it may be the motherboard. First switch IDE cables (maybe just disconnect your CD/DVD drive and use that cable) to test that. If that works then you found your problem. If not, try your hard drive in another computer (a friend's?) and see if it works. If it does work then your motherboard got fubared, if not, then it's your hard drive and you should hang your head in shame. :p

Dude, whatever happened to using batteries...a few AA batteries in series would have given you all the power you needed for that LED. :Q
