Re: Front USB 3.0 ports - why not just have a USB extension lead coming from a rear USB port?

Do "Let's Play" videos on YouTube like Pewdiepie.

Maybe you can become a streamer like ManvsGame on Twitchtv.

They make great money.

I just bought an SSD and don't feel the need to upgrade anymore.

I have only dx10 but after playing crysis 2 the series lost its allure to me. And I don't have time to play the other games anymore.

So now I just play aoe2HD when I have time and watch TV serials. I got old I guess, no fps anymore.

I rarely build entirely new rig. What I have now dates back to about 2009. Though whatever I build next is going to have to start from the ground up. Everything but the PSU and HDDs/SSDs needs to be replaced.

As it stands...
Biostar Mobo
8GB DDR2 1000
2x Radeon HD 6850s
AMD Phenom X2 955

The CPU isn't even supposed to be officially compatible with the board though it works just fine.

PC is still my primary gaming system. Though it doesn't really struggle with any games U have other than ACIII. Though that's mostly Ubisoft's fault for poorly optimizing their code for the platform.

Honestly, I haven't felt the itch to upgrade like I have in the past. It's a lot of money and other priorities are starting to take over. I'm kind of playing wait and see. If SteamOS takes off, I'd be more than happy to dump Windows for good.

I kinda miss building computers. I remember back in my OCing days but haven't done it in years. I think the last real PC I build was a water-cooled Q6600 rig. Built some HTPC's and failed tries at NAS's but no powerhouses. I don't even have a desktop anymore, just notebooks and tablets. Most powerful thing I do is encode and i7 in my MBP handles that well enough.

Haha buyer's remorse. Recently got that too. I just ordered parts to build a server, came up to about $1,700. Though that is pretty cheap to consider it's a Xeon with 32GB of ECC ram and server grade motherboard and case. I opted to not go redundant PSU though. Believe it or not that adds practically another grand to the price. Would be nice to have, but not a must especially if I decide to build another identical server for redundancy.

Heck my only server with redundant PSU is my storage server and that was only done recently.

Only downside though is that the PSU is proprietary so if it dies I'm kind of screwed until I do build a secondary box. PSUs don't really die all that often though.

On the subject of money I was just checking my mortgage for fun and plugged some values in a mortgage calculator and if that calculator is right, I have 10 years left on my mortgage. That means I'll be 37 when it's paid off. That's a scary thought. 10 years goes way too fast these days.

I miss building systems too but the way tech is nowadays you can mostly just do side grades for the next 5-6 years and you should be fine. I think my next system when everything I have is completely obsolete would be a MacBook Retina.

32gb is obscene. But yeah I kinda have the same problem. I have a ridiculous gaming pc and I play bullshit like hearthstone on it.

32GB of RAM isn't obscene for some things. I have 16GB of RAM on my main development computer and I'm struggling to keep my RAM under 16GB. I wish my motherboard could support 32GB.

Originally when I was looking at building my server I actually considered 128GB of ram. But realistically 32GB is more than enough. That's the max the motherboard I went with can take. Chances are if I need more I'll want a second box anyway.

shouldn't that be AMD Phenom X2 555?

I bought one last summer for $40 and then unlocked the other 2 cores and had me a cheap quad core that passed Prime95.

RAID 0 boot? Bad idea. The only vaguely valid scenario I can think of still doesn't make much sense and I can think of better alternatives.

1kW PSU? Are you planning on the world's biggest CPU OC along with 4 ultra-high-end graphics cards?

Front USB 3.0 ports - I posted earlier suggesting an extension lead from a rear USB 3.0 port, or if you needed to, you could add a cheap-as-chips USB 3.0 PCIE card, possibly with USB 3.0 headers, then buy a gizmo for your case to give you front USB 3.0 ports.

The raid 0 raptors were old. I did it back then when it was popular, everyone was doing it.

The power supply is admittedly a little over the top. I've always been one to go overkill on power supplies. I have read stories about crappy ones. I went 1000w for a little headroom.

It never dawned on me I could add a usb 3 pci card

I bet that Civilization 5 would play awesome on that thing.

Yeah, but then you'd be playing Civ 5. Why add insult to injury?

About the memory, don't feel bad. I've had 32GB for two years now. If you want to max it out, use PovRay. If this motherboard could take 64GB, I'd get it.
