I just got a call from MCI about switching long distance. I wasn't mean or anything, let him talk for a minute and then said I wasn't interested. He says "Alright then sir.... thanks alot...." in a REALLY sad voice. Sounded like he was upset haha. These guys work on commission right? I kinda feel bad for them then, cause they probably get a TON of hang ups a day. Must be a pain in the butt to actually sell whatever it is they are trying to sell.

Anyone ever work in that field? Whats it like?

Telemarketers rank right down there with Lawyers and used car salesmen in my book.

I used to think that. But I've gotten to know lawyers much better in the last few months, so I've been apologizing to alot of telemarketers and used car salesmen lately.

I don't care if the person on the other end of the phone is the nicest person in the world. When they are doing their telemarketing they are the scum of the earth. I hate them and wish they would drop dead. Maggots. Find a real job.

Telemarketing should be illegal.

It's just a tactic of his. You know how many females feel bad for him and buy because of that?

Haha, whats wrong with lawyers?

If you have a small town with only one lawyer, that lawyer will be dirt poor. Add another lawyer to that town and they both become filthy rich.

Telemarketers don't cry that easily. Naturally to take a job like that, they must be used to rejection and what you did was very polite. I once talked to a girl who was trying to solicit money for the alumni association for about 30min and I made her feel like crap afterwards. She told me it was her first day on the job and felt really bad.

I get calls from the American Veteran Handicapped Workers Society (something like that) and the person on the phone will start with "Hello, Mr. kranky, this is your old buddy Dave from the [society]. You know, the handicapped people? You bought our [light bulbs/trash bags/etc.] from us last year (I never did) and we're calling back our friends to offer you some more great deals. Since this is the only job I can get because of my handicap, I depend on good people like you to help me make a living."

"No thanks, I'm not interested"

"But Mr. kranky (crying, now) I need to earn a living. This is all I have! My rent is due and I have to sell 40 more cartons of light bulbs before I can go home tonight! Please, please, Mr. kranky, I need your help! I don't want to go back to the shelter!"

The people never do a good job of faking it. It's like a junior high acting class.

I doubt you made him cry. You probably just pissed him off by having him waste his time and give his spiel instead of just telling him that you weren't interested up-front. Or he might be new or something.
Telemarketers don't work on commission -- they receive wage (usually $10/hr. or less) plus very small bonuses. Their jobs are very production-oriented, with quotas, etc. In general, it's a crappy low paying job, with managers riding them and idiot customers yelling at them all day.

If you felt that bad for him, you should have switched to MCI. Otherwise, you didn't.

I only let him talk for a minute before saying not interested, actually it was more like 20 seconds, instead of just cutting him off and saying no.

If it wasn't for telemarketers, wouldn't direct sales numbers for many companies go down significantly, thus hurting our GDP, and cause a recession (NOT RIGHT AWAY, with time). I say let the telemarketers make their calls, its good for your portfolio(kinda)!

What about door-to-door salesmen? I don't like to be interrupted while...playing UT...and get annoyed especially when they offer magazine subscription for retail price, just so they could win a vacation or something like that.

I always worry about being rude to a door-to-door salesman. They know where I live, they've seen my face, and as I live in a condo complex with numbered spots, they know which car is mine.
