I was going along a vast number of cashier-less checkouts tonight with a few items in my cart. I was going at a brisk pace as I normally do. Well near the beginning a woman coming from one of the perpendicular isles merged with me. Her son was with her as well.

Given my speed I gained about a half cart length on her quite quickly and I'll be damned but I swear she sped up because before I knew it she had a half cart length on me. I didn't look to my right to examine the expresion on her face but, folks, we were truckin along.

I didn't want to make too big a scene...I'm a bit of a clown so I'll step it up a bit but I do have some pride. I upped my pace a notch to maintain speed with her.

By this time we'd passed the first lit up register but there were people at it. Not long after there was one that was empty and I'm guessing she had her eye on this for quite some time. Unfortunately for her I had the inside and she'd of had to crash me out to get there first.

I respectfully threw my four items on the belt and quickly paid up with debit and left. I didn't want to rub it in.

Skoorb, you did use proper technique. You should have been drafting behind her, maybe hitting her in the @ss a couple of times with the front of the cart, then at the last moment slingshot around past her and pull into the cashier. You her wind resistance to your advantage.

hmmm depends on the size of the other racer. if he tried to hit her in the behind he might have damaged his cart and he would have completely blew himself outta the race.

Well this is true but I was in target, not walmart, so the average weight class is more in the middle weight than heavy for shoppers.

ahhh very true. but she did have a kid...that could have been a factor. she might have just tossed him at you to distract you...lots of variables...i think you chose correct in taking the inside track....

why does target have that many registers? have you ever seen both in 1 row open? i haven't. i don't think i've ever seen more than 1/4 the registers open at once.

This target has around 20 I think and the most I've ever seen open were almost half that. Normally when I go - after work, late at night, etc. - there are 2-4 register open.

between the grocery store i go to and the scrub-mart supercenter i go to there are usually less than a third of the lanes open. it really upsets me. i have to wait in line behind five people will FULL carts so i can pay for five things.

Peak hours for Target is Saturdays and Sundays - usually from 5-7 pm. (At least from what the manager told me when I went in for an interview)

Just got back from my local Target to find this thread. I didn't have quite as much fun on my trip. There were three of the twenty registers open. I placed all my stuff on the conveyor to which the cashier informed me that her conveyor was broken. This cashier was full of personality to boot.
