I think I just accidentally overclocked my computer.

I'm a newbie.

I was looking around in my motherboard's BIOS (Epox 8RDA+) and I changed the FSB to 200 mhz. When my computer restarted, it started beeping, and I freaked out, thinking I had messed something up. I reset the CMOS with the jumper thing, and then set the FSB to 166 mhz. When my computer booted up, it used to say the processor (Athlon XP 1800+) was running at around 1.54 ghz, and now it says 1.9 ghz!

My questions: Is this safe to do? And what else can I do to speed this puppy up? :D

Thank you

Ben

yeah it's safe...

i tink you're running at default voltage so you're good to go!

i think you can prolly run even 2.0 ghz if you up your mult a little...

what ram are you using?

and what chip are you using?

My ram chip: Elixir pc2700, 333mhz, cl 2.5

As far as the chip: is that the processor? I guess it's an Athlon XP 1800+ Socket A (Socket 246). I got this from WCPUID program. Is there a different program I can use to find out this info that you ask for?

and I have the FSB set at 166 mhz with a 11.0 mult. I set it higher, but my computer kept restarting.

i was looking for the coding on it...

i wanted to see if it was an A or a B tbred

if it's a b tbred, you should be able to get more out of it if you up your vcore a little more

1.8 ghz is good enough for now. I think I'll learn more about overclocking, and then come back when I don't need someone to hold my hand. Thanks for your help though!

Get a freeware called Aida32. It'll tell you what stepping your cpu is & other extra stuff (i.e., cpu/system temp. voltages and a bunch of other nice stuff).

okay, thanks. I couldn't find the steppings in any of the other programs I was using.

you have a t-bred b. it should be able to hit 2.1GHz without any problems. only once have i seen a t-bred b that didn't hit 2.1GHz.
btw, i also overclocked my processor accidentally without realising it. it was a P2 400. was playing with the DIP switches and ended up in 112MHz x 4 = 448MHz
i was so happy then and i'm now still using it

When I try to get it to run that fast, is it just a matter of experimenting with FSB and multiplier combinations? Also, what is a safe temperature for the processor to be running at?

LOL i have a tbred B that wont even do 2ghz at 1.85v :(

(without it being unstable anyway..)

I had mine running at 2ghz, but windows kept crashing.

If you just stumbled upon the ability to overclock your CPU, you are probably using a stock or something near cpu cooler. You will want to download MBM5 or some other hardware monitoring software to keep an eye on those temps!

Overclocking without any real physical tweaking ...and it's safe? whaaa? Is there anymore info on this? I have a pretty stable mobo asus a7v333, wouldn't mind the extra boost to my athlon 1800..
