Awhile back I posted that I wanted to use my router for a switch only. It was recommended that I disable DHCP and just use it with a cross over. That I did and it worked fine. Then I purchased a larger switch and decided to set the router back up to work normally so I could sell it. Well I spent the better part of the day trying to access the manager and it just wont work. I am assuming I disable a wee too much and now it wont telnet, nor can I access using a serial port with Hyper Terminal. The procedure calls for making a serial connection and then reboot the router, and the manager is supposed to appear avaliable during the boot up sequence. Instead all it gets is a bunch of lines and zeros and other misc garbled message and nothing that appears to be in normal text. I guess this thing will be left to be a switch from now on. I aged another year today.. :p

What is the brand and model #? A lot of routers have a reset switch that makes it easy. If you did screw it up, don't feel too bad; routers are getting cheaper and cheaper.

Its An RT314 netgear. Its not my only router, but I was going to trade it for something. Just have to change to Plan B. Thanks

Do you have the correct baud rate?

And parity settings, and flow control. My Dlink 701 console link would not work unless ALL of the serial port settings were just right.

I changed baud rate numerous times, but mostly 9600 for the connect, which it stated was the connect speed. It also stated to use no parity and no flow control, but I tried variants. It did connect a bunch of times, but the writing on the console of hyperterminal when I would do the reset of the router was illegible, or not ASCII. I feel like I could make it work but could never get some kind of interpretable language from it. I also have it set to VT100. Have tried both types of keys. Tried 3 serial cables just in case.

What about hooking it up to a PC with DHCP enabled, then do an ipconfig /all and enter the gateway IP into the web browser to try and bring up the config page that way? Assuming it has DHCP enabled on the router of course.

I've seen some netgears do this when its started without any connection on the WAN port and the DHCP is disabled... in this case I simply give the WAN side a live line and after booting go into the IP of the router (hope you remember it)...

at any rate, its worth a shot.

Thanks Abstrak, but I couldnt remember the IP I had set for it.

However! I re-explored the settings for baud rate as some of you suggested as I finally had time to mess with it again today, and lo and behold, I found that setting the baud rate all the way up to 115k let me FINALLY access the manager! :D
Thanks again for all your tips and suggestions as I now have it working again just fine. :)! This thing is supposed to connect at 9600..
