I think I have a virus... how to check/clean?

I haven't gotten a virus since "ANTICMOSA" back when I was trading custom bootdisks with a friend so we could run Xwing on our 386's. Haven't run anti-virus software ever either.

but it appears to have happened. Seemingly at random the sound of a single phone ring will play through my speakers.

I blame kazaa, or my dumb arse for running an executable I got from it.

So whats the program to get for this stuff?
InnoculateIT
McAffe
Norton

also, how much is this gonna cost me? I may have access to something through school, but it's sure to be an old version, how much would that matter?

Well I'll be damned, I haven't seen you around in a long time Bart :). We've moved to Realmnet #paintball if you want to stop by sometime and visit :D

AS for your virus problem, check out Grisoft and download AVG Free edition. You can turn off the automatic background stuff if you don't want it running.

Once you've pinpointed the virus, head over to Symantec and search the virus encyclopedia for it. They have a wealth of good repair tools.

Good luck fixing it you libertarian bastard ;)

With a free antivirus program you got what you paid for. Pay a few bucks for a real antivirus program and you won't be sorry you did.

AVG hasn't failed me yet. Housecall is just as good.

There's that school of thought, then there's the one which states why pay someone for something you can get for free. There was a great table somewhere comparing some of the costly mainstream antivirus programs to the freebies and the freebies caught as much or higher percent of virii in a benchmark. Has anyone else seen this, please post the link as I forgot where it is and can't find it again...

I still like to search everyone in a while for virii on my own. There are several common locations for trojans and the like to load themselves in the registry like the CurrentConfig\run keys. As well as the system.ini file and win.ini file, you can find most virii on your own without any help!

Iozon,

Read this article in PC World magazine July 2002 issue about antivirus programs and how well they work. It is on pages 92 to 95.

Free: If it looks to good to be true you are correct.
