I think I have a bad USB header

My wife's pc would be running along just fine, then suddenly the mouse would stop responding. I spent quite a bit of time messing with drivers, swapping mice, etc. Turns out, I moved it to a different USB header and the problem went away. This sounds to me like a hardware problem, right? I don't think there's any software patches or tweaks that would fix this, are there?

Sounds like its just that USB socket has gone bad. Not making good contact or I have had several systems that I built have the little piece of metal that is supposed to be some kind of back pressure against the mobo actually bend out and go into the USB slot (Luckily mobo wouldn't boot and in the look around as to why, it was spotted). \

If it has no problems with the other socket then its just a bad socket most likely.
