Ok, so I was just about to plug a 250mb zip drive into the front side USB of my brand new ASPIRE X-Navigator case, when bam, i had just touched (not even connected!) the cable when my monitor just blanked out. Now i cant get anything on any monitors, but all the fans and lights still go on. I have no idea what happened, but im guessing i fried something somehow. I have an ASUS P4P800-E Deluxe mobo, a 3.4 ghz P4, 1 gb of kingston hyperX RAM, and an eVGA 6800 Ultra. Any help would be AMAZING, as this really sucks (i had just finished playing half life 2, and was minutes away from the ending....), or should i be talking to ASUS about an RMA?
 
have you tried another monitor? either that, or perhaps another power supply...also check your cables to make sure you didn't pull anything out.
 
Yes, I tried another monitor to no avail. And the PSU still works fine as far as I can tell, why would i need to try a new one?
 
The power supply can cause a lot of problems that you'd never expect...just from experience and other people's posts...anyway, this happened to a teacher of mine in school, but he'd just bang the monitor a few times and everthing would work, but if you tried another monitor I'd suggest checking your RAM and see if it's in properly...or try another RAM module.
 
Turn the machine off, and remove the mains cable from the back of the PC. Wait a few seconds, then plug it back in and try again.

Now, do you get any beeps? Do you see the hard disk light flashing, as if it's loading Windows?
If not, then you have some form of hardware problem.
Like febuld suggested, try a different PSU if you have one first, otherwise it's time to start unplugging various things to see if the motherboard's okay 🙂

[Edit] It might be worth checking that you have the USB ports wired correctly. If, for instance, the +5v is connected to the grounding pin, then it's possible that simply touching the USB cable to the port without actually plugging it in, caused a short.
 
I've just had a very similar thing with my pc, also with an Asus P4P800-E Deluxe mb. I don't know if Windows was already frozen or not, but I plugged in a usb hard drive in to the front of the case (Antec desktop and psu), and it was certainly frozen after that. Now I can't post, although the case and cpu fans and cd drives are all powered so I was assuming the psu is ok. I'm not 100% certain now whether the usb ports were actually connected to the mb. The room was also really hot at the time. I had almost dismissed the usb port as being the cause because of this, but this makes me wonder now.

I've cleared the cmos, tried with another monitor, tested the ram, cpu and video card in another pc (all fine), so I'm assuming I need a new mb.

Does anyone know if Asus are ok with rma-ing mb's from self-built systems? They say this on their website: Warranty invalid if system has been disassembled by end-user or non-ASUS-authorized repair centers.

With regards to the warranty, I think you'll be fine. They'd be facing an outrage if they didn't RMA boards from end-users.
 
I had the same problem with my computer. Where everything turned on but I got no display on my moniter. I narrowed it down to the motherboard.
 
Ok, so I'm just going to go with RMA. If they determine that its something else, I'll replace it. I intern at Intel, so a CPU won't be hard to come by, but I obviously don't want to replace my vid-card. Thanks for all the help.
