I think I found an error at my schools online test. Anyone can confirm?

I get this question thats pretty simple.

The sales tax on an item is 6%. Express the total cost, C, in terms of the price of the item, P.

I put down. C*.06=P And its wrong. Am I wrong or the machine.

You have to add the tax onto the price of the item.
So, yes, your wrong.

You are wrong.

Total cost C is equal to the Price, P * 1.06.

So:

C = 1.06P

You could also have it like:

P = C + C(.06)

P = final price
C = cost

It's 1.06 because the total cost is the cost of the item + the tax.

Item cost = P
Tax = 0.06P

Add them together & you have 1.06P.

Dammit, now I'm reversing my variables too.

it's asking for the total price....

.06 * P is just the sales tax...

1.06 *P would give you the sales tax, plus the price of the item = Total cost (C)

Or... C = .06P + P

<< Ok, now I feel dumb. Why is it 1.06 not .06? >>

If you multiply the cost, C, of the product by .06, you will be getting a pretty small number. That small number is "just" the tax. They asked you for entire price, so you have to be getting a whole result, therefore 1.06.

Multiplying the base price by .06 will give you the amount of tax you are going to pay for the item. You are taking 6 hundredths of the price to give you the net tax.

Multiplying the base price by 1.06 will give you the amount of tax PLUS the base price. The price * 1.00 will give you the base price. The base price * .06 will give you the tax. Add the 2 numbers and you get the total cost, C.

C = P * 1.06

Edit: I need to learn to type faster. :|

<< it should be

C=.06P + P

Sorry you were wrong
>>

no they weren't

ac+ab=a(b+c) therefore C=.06P + P = C=1.06P. It's called the distributive property. Repeat after me kids...distributive property.
