You would think that if trump cared about his base that things like tariffs, that impact his base voters the most, would be walked back quickly or he would be speeding up whatever negotiations he thinks needs to happen. However that has not been the case, despite countries specifically targeting products/industries that impact his supporters.
So why is he doing it?
I think I've figured it out. He's doing it because it forces China to go elsewhere. Take a guess who would be one of the biggest beneficiaries from these tariffs with China? If you said Russia, you win!
I guess if trump can't unilaterally remove tarrifs from Russia then he'll go around them to help out his master.

Obviously, weakening our status on the world stage as well as hurting our relationships with our allies is a big plus too but those don't have an immediate payoff like improving Russia's cash flow.
