I dunno. I thought G4 with OSX was cool(and still is). Sure, you can't measure your manhood and self-worth like you can in x86 PCs with Sandra/3DM2K1/etc, but...

NOOOOOOOOOOOO for only 1 reason

personaly i LOVE macs, i mean you can play Diablo2 on them, you can get MS office for them, it's easy to use Unix but there is one thing that sucks....
APPLE HAS A MONOPOLY ON THOSE PUTERS!!!

if you look at the price of mac ram compared to standard DDR ram it's like twice the price. if it's an Imac you are stuck with a crappy 15" monitor only 13" visible with a HUGE black borderline which makes it only like 12" visible. if you get the tower Apple that is out now it costs like 2 grand!!! (Canadian)

i looked at this flyer for Compusmart and saw a G4 for $1,999 and it included this:
256mb ram
ethernet card
40gb hard drive
DVD-RW (didn't say speed)
800mhz G4 processor
it didn't say the kind of video card
1 year waranty

now look at MY system: $1,999
Athlon XP 1700+
512mb PC2100 DDR ram (1 chip)
60gb 5400RPM hdd
GeForce Ti200 w/ TV OUT (shut up i know it's not the best)
Gigabyte mobo with KT266A chipset (i don't feel like getting out the manual for the model number)
Sound Blaster Live 5.0 sound card
ethernet card
extra case fan
52x CD-ROM (i got burner on other puter so i dont need another)
floopy drive
3 year unconditional warranty (unless i start bridging L1 gaps or whatever)
40W speakers with 100W subwoofer (oh man does it give the bass!)
19" monitor that doesn't hurt my eyes like my old 15" did but its like 2 feet long! lol

now with that G4 above, the only monitors you can buy for it are flatscreens which cost over $1,000 for a 17" (apple only though)

Ok, my friend decided he wanted to do this in december, this is what he did.

Started out being a PC guy (in fact he won the amd athlon contest)
bought a powerbook on ebay
sold the powerbook after a week on ebay
Bought a G3 tower on ebay
Got tired of it, wanted a better mac, sold that on ebay
Went to Compusa (i had to get cdrs), he bought an iBook 500mhz (white colored) for 1200
Got tired of that, sold it on ebay.
Bought a Compaq 1ghz laptop from his work.
End of story.

Most Macs run more silently and more cool than PCs.

You can buy deprecated Mac models (such as bubblegum iMacs) real cheap.

Be warned that aftermarket peripherals for Macs are obscenely expensive. Assume, for all intents and purposes, that your Mac cannot be upgraded or expanded. While you can get a standard GeForce2 MX for $40, a Mac-compatible GeForce2 MX sells for $600 at the Apple store. No, this is not a joke.

I recommend that you get a last-year iMac, or a secondhand Cube, or some such, and put LinuxPPC on it.

(Best Steve voice) "Dude, your gonna get a Mac".

There is nothing wrong with Mac. If you're not gonna use it for games, it's a great choice for a computer. I feel that going to Mac was the best decision I made, and have been happy ever since, and it keeps getting better and better.

Are you going to get at least a G4, i wouldn't touch a g3 these days cause you really don't get any benefit from the chip. I would wait til late march or the middle of the year. If they announce anything big in the pro line, the prices on the current g4 crop will drop fast.

Dude, << slaps the crack rock from your hand >> friends don't let friends buy mac.

I guess they are fine if you want one to sit on your desk and look pretty...like a nice pretty pink one, or a fuschia one..

They are ok as long as you don't want to ever upgrade them and spend alot of money initially...plus purchase all your software at compusa(about the only store that still has mac stuff)..

Personally, I wouldn't want to be shackled.

I have a feeling that some of you have never used a MAC and don't know much about the hardware inside them. Before you flame me, I prefer a my 4 pcs over my mac.

Halogen: You do know that there is nothing special about the memory in the Macs now. You can put in a stick of PC133 168 pin DIMM from Crucial in a mac. Also, you do not have to get an Apple cinema display for a monitor. The video card that comes with the mac have both ADC connector and a standard vga connector. You can use any monitor on a mac.

I have a feeling that some people need to do a little research before they comment on things. I do agree that some of the upgrades are rather expensive though. Of course, I don't have to pay for them because I just get my work to pay for it.

Even if you don't play games that doesn't mean the Mac isn't going to be much slower than a similarly priced PC, but if attractiveness is all you care about go ahead.

If I had to choose between those 2 computers you put up, I would pick the mac. The new G4s come equipped with either a GeForce2MX or 3 depending on what the store decided to equip it with, it has a DVD-RW on it, the HD is faster, the Mac processor performance is probably very close to the performance of the AMD (I'm talking about the standard 867MHz. I'm guessing it's not the dual 800MHz in the system shown). And as someone else pointed out, if you can put in PC Ram and a monitor, all the better. Gimme the mac.

I would definitely get a PC (have two of them now)...mainly because when a system is getting to be too old (maximum of one year), I can always rip it apart and use some of the parts in my next system, thus saving a good deal of money.

I would not spend my money on " anything " because it looks good myself. But, if you have the money go for it. I use both and in the past owned Macintosh. I would'nt mind having one now but for the $$'s I can't justify doing so. For $1200.00 I can build or upgrade my current PC. I do like OS X though.

I get the impression that many people out there have never used neither MacOS nor OSX. They think one's bad and the other's good just because others say so.

Suggestion: Instead of spending $2500 on a G4 Mac, build a decent, inexpensive AMD system for $1000 and buy an Apple iBook for $1500.

Best of both worlds!
