Why?
Because textbooks suck at explaining things. My calc book was 1400 pages long and was so brief on critical topics it sucked. Plus they run $100+. Most of them are so hard to understand that they're effectively worthless if you don't have a good prof.
The Schaum's outlines are cheaper ($<20) and can explain in 200 pages what takes a 1000 pages in a textbook. Plus examples are actually WORKED OUT and not just given a solution in the back of the book.
I'm not a fan of my diff eq book either. The only way I'm making it through that class is with the Schaum's book on ODEs. The same holds true for my circuits class....
