I find it quite puzzling that UT3 flopped so badly, and it's hard to pinpoint a single reason why that happened.
I don't, the demo was terrible. Poor menus, graphics which didn't look any better than a console and horrible random lag earned this a quick uninstall. There were other problems with it, including UK players not being able to type @ for the email field. Every other character was fine, just not the one that you had to use in order to complete the mandatory account signup. How retarded is that?
The only thing 'epic' about it was the amount of fail.
Lol it was "Epic" indead~
Considering it was a demo, it was expected all the kinks would be worked out. Then people found out what they played in the demo was more or less the finished game, and everybody lost interest. If they fixed the UI and lag problems (they've fixed the lag issues; that was apparently an Nvidia driver issue) and added in the content we had in 2k4 I think it wouldn't have tanked like it did.
Someone mentioned they thought the UI would be fixed-- my thought is pretty skeptical; they're working on UT3 for Xbox360; and the issues with the UI are pretty extensive-- I have no doubt they would drop the PC version entirely if building maps and content were possible on the PS3. It's obvious from the menu design all we have is a console port here-- it doesn't save simple things like your gameplay-type choice in the RAM or even on the disk-- because whenever you're gaming and want to play another server [you disconnect and wait 10 seconds for the menu interface to load and then spend 6 seconds navigating to the server browser again], when you get back to the multiplayer section it hasn't even remembered that you were playing in CTF, and doesn't dump you back into the server browser. So right there is 3 needless clicks-- click "servers", click gameplay type (which is always default set to Deathmatch), then click CTF, and THEN you get a list of servers.
Ie, now IANAC [coder], but it appears everything is simply loaded into RAM and then flushed as soon as you get into the game, presumably to make more room for game data, as we all know UT3 takes >4gB of ram to run.
