I think Epic is trouble with UT3 sales numbers and game activity and they know it

I find it quite puzzling that UT3 flopped so badly, and it's hard to pinpoint a single reason why that happened.

I don't, the demo was terrible. Poor menus, graphics which didn't look any better than a console and horrible random lag earned this a quick uninstall. There were other problems with it, including UK players not being able to type @ for the email field. Every other character was fine, just not the one that you had to use in order to complete the mandatory account signup. How retarded is that?

The only thing 'epic' about it was the amount of fail.

Lol it was "Epic" indead~

Considering it was a demo, it was expected all the kinks would be worked out. Then people found out what they played in the demo was more or less the finished game, and everybody lost interest. If they fixed the UI and lag problems (they've fixed the lag issues; that was apparently an Nvidia driver issue) and added in the content we had in 2k4 I think it wouldn't have tanked like it did.

Someone mentioned they thought the UI would be fixed-- my thought is pretty skeptical; they're working on UT3 for Xbox360; and the issues with the UI are pretty extensive-- I have no doubt they would drop the PC version entirely if building maps and content were possible on the PS3. It's obvious from the menu design all we have is a console port here-- it doesn't save simple things like your gameplay-type choice in the RAM or even on the disk-- because whenever you're gaming and want to play another server [you disconnect and wait 10 seconds for the menu interface to load and then spend 6 seconds navigating to the server browser again], when you get back to the multiplayer section it hasn't even remembered that you were playing in CTF, and doesn't dump you back into the server browser. So right there is 3 needless clicks-- click "servers", click gameplay type (which is always default set to Deathmatch), then click CTF, and THEN you get a list of servers.

Ie, now IANAC [coder], but it appears everything is simply loaded into RAM and then flushed as soon as you get into the game, presumably to make more room for game data, as we all know UT3 takes >4gB of ram to run.

What is this "lag" problem people are talking about? Is it network lag or something with the rendering? I found that the demo was behaving oddly in a number of ways until I changed some setting in the ini file to remove the framecap, upon which it worked fine. Conventional network lag didn't seem like any more a problem than usual, although I only played it briefly.

Network lag. I tried a couple of servers and everyone was complaining about it. The matches became laughable cos it was lucky dip if you hit anything.

they must suck with netcode; moving Tribes to the unreal engine wit T:V is the major reason that franchise died off, one of the bigger problems was absolute crap netcode relative to the previous engines Tribes was based off of.

[Yes because every penny you pay for a game goes directly to the developer.

You dolt.

Don't get me wrong - Epic made bank off GoW, but it wasn't no $60x3 mil = 180 mil. There's a bit more to it than that.

You return with your attitude I see.

First I said 'even if they only got $10.00 a copy', most sane people would understand that as a guestimate.

Second , I bet I understand the industry far more than you do .
Do you have 8 games that have shipped and sold that you have personally worked on ?
How about a resume with a list of references with 11 publishers ?
Oh , you don't ?

I don't bring my attitude to the forums and normally don't bring up that I have clients in both the gaming and film industries but sometimes its warranted.

I misinterpreted your post. I thought you were intimating that even if they had sold each copy (i.e. retail) @ 10.00 they'd pick up 30 mil.

My mistake. Dolt status removed.

Epic has given up on the PC for the UT series. If that isn't easily apparent from the horrible port from console that UT3 is, then I don't know what is. Mark Rein is now enamored with consoles and left PCs behind. Oh, and the graphics at default settings suck balls. Hey, lets use a drab palette and overkill on the bloom, everyone will love that.

The only good part about UT3 was the gameplay of certain modes. Everything, everything else was sub-par and not well done. I guess gameplay is not everything after all...

Eh, I get to play UT3 at my lanparties with bots and friends and it works just as well as UT2K4 for me so it served it's purpose. I play other games online with people but for some reaon I have always loved playing UT with just bots. In my book the game was a success so I guess that works...

And it is darn pretty. :)
