I think about upgrading soon, and then I think . . . "What the heck for?"

I've got a 2.4B/4G4A+ with 1GB of PC2100 and a Radeon 9700 . . . I've been kicking around, thinking about doing a 3.0C/875 setup, and I keep thinking, why not just wait?

I mean, am I really going to see that much difference? Shouldn't I just wait until Opteron and Prescott are mainstream to make a move? I'm not having problems running any software, and Half Life 2 should run fairly well on my setup in theory.

Thoughts?

Fast proc, lotsa ram. No need to upgrade, tho you're probably kicking yourself if you got that 2.4b chip when it was around $700 😉

Nope. I got the chip and the motherboard at Fry's for $249, about 6 months ago. 😉

My sentiments as well. My 2.4b@3ghz 418DDR will be plenty till prescott is out and the best model for overclocking and best board for doing it have been established by the usual suspects 😉 DDR2 is still at least down the road- Q2 '04 or more so I won't wait for it.

How about an OS upgrade? If I've got Windows 2000 Pro, should I even bother with changing to XP?

No way! I just finally caved in and put W2K pro on my P4 box and with all the updates including SP4 it's great. So what if XP gives me a couple more frames a second? That's just my take on it but different strokes......

I've also been having the same thoughts about my system. I really wouldn't mind upgrading at all.

Soltek FRN75-L
512MB Crucial PC2700
Radeon 8500 64MB (Already dying, getting artifacts)
AMD XP 1700+
40GB WD

Too...

A7N8X Deluxe
AMD XP 2500+
Radeon 9600 Pro
Segate 80GB 7200 S-ATA

Now what would I be upgrading for exactly? Since Half-Life 2 delayed until Chirstmas and we will have the new Grahpics Cards coming out by then. I was also thinking about a Audigy 2 but then we have of course lovely PCI-Express which will eventually take over PCI. So why buy old technology? Yes, I do know PCI Cards are backwards compatable with PCI-Express slots. I guess I just have to wait a while until I upgrade again. 🙁

The same here. I bought a PIV@2.4, 512 mb. DDR 333 (WinXP Pro) in January this year. I won't upgrade the configuration until the Prescott becomes mainstream. Everything runs just fine, until now I haven't even tried to overclock the system, although I know p4b@2.4 is perfect for that. Definitely, that's my decision too.
