I think a professor is purposely avoiding me

Cliffs:
- I asked this professor about a month ago to write me a letter of recommendation so I can study in France this summer. He said sure and he'd get ahold of me when it was done.
- I gave him 2 weeks before I sent him a reminder email asking about the progress of it, didn't get anything back. (This was two Friday's ago)
- Called his office the following Monday, got his voice-mail-- asked him about the progress, left him my number.
- Went into his office Wednesday, he was in a meeting. Left him a note saying I'd be stopping in again Friday.
- Stopped in Friday, was "out to lunch." Told his secretary to make sure he gets the message that I need to get in touch with him before [this Friday].
- Stopped in today, was "out to lunch" again.

This is getting frustrating. If he doesn't want to write me the letter why couldn't he just say so? Worst part is now I have to hunt around to find someone who's willing to write me a letter of recommendation that needs to be submitted by this Friday. Ugh..

Edit: Grammar.

Update
I just got off the phone with him. He said he lost the form so I have to run down and give it to him, but he still seemed like he was OK with doing it. When I go to pick it up I should get him a box of bagels or something. Does that sound reasonable?

That sucks. Perhaps the program you are applying to will wait a while. This isn't quite the same, but when I applied to college one my recommendations was quite late. The college said it was fine as long as my application was turned in on time and the recommendation arrived within the next few weeks.

Not sure if this is the case here. Since we're on such a tight schedule with having to send passports to get visa's and book flights, hotel, etc. all by May 24th, I can't see the application review process taking longer than 2 weeks.

If its that important, maybe you should camp outside the professors office until he shows up. When his secretary says he is out for lunch, don't leave. Just sit down and wait.

BINGO

**EDIT**

BTW you could write a recommendation and show it to him and see if it gives him an idea of what to say. Maybe he will even just read it and sign it. Some people are just lazy.

I dunno about the camping on his office part, but sending him a proposed letter of recommendation written by you is certainly not a bad idea.

If you want me to put your writing on letterhead and send it out for you, send me a PM. Be aware that I'll probably add a few of my own details and some odd comments about France, but do you really think anyone reads these letters anyway??

Thanks for the offer. I'll keep you in mind good sir! :)

Actually (update): I just got off the phone with him. He said he lost the form so I have to run down and give it to him, but he still seemed like he was OK with doing it. When I go to pick it up I should get him a box of bagels or something. Does that sound reasonable?

He is helping you. Showing a little appreciation never hurts

We're pretty busy right now, I've got 22 tests to grade, I've got to give a set of tests tomorrow and then again on Monday. In between that, homework grading, labs, senior design projects to grade as well as status reports. This is, afterall, week 4 of the semester! I've got a recommendation to do as well, hopefully by Friday.

outto lunch... so go back to his office later that day? why would he want to avoid you? it doesn't matter even if he just flat out tell you "oh sorry im busy you're SOL" since he doesn't need anything from you...
